    Hi,

I have two FCP edit stations on a Gigabit network and I want them to share storage to edit DV and DV50 media. Do I need a server to do this or can I just attach a fast RAID to the Gigabit switch.

Any advice would be great. When it comes to IT I’m clueless.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hey Tom,

The answer is well there are a couple of ways to make this happen.

One solution would be to use a technology called iSCSI with a solution from Studio Network Solutions called Global SAN
    https://www.studionetworksolutions.com/products/product.php?pci=10
they offer the storage in a couple of different sizes depending on how much storage that you would need.

Another solution would be to buy an Apple Server and X Serve RAID, and use AFP, Although Apple may not support this configuration for capturing from Final Cut Pro, I’ve set this up before with sucess, though you may need a different Gigabit ethernet switch.

hookup a computer with a lot of storage thats raided… connect to it through the network.. youll get at least 50mb/sec with one drive. someone told me that gigabit is a lot faster with pcs than macs.

Use network cards and a switch that supports Jumbo Frames.
