  • Hmmm….can you render out a ProRes Quicktime? Or no? Only ProRes MXF? What does it do with ProRes? Because ProRes QT is still a deliverable to many networks. Heck, some want DNxHD QT…they still want QT.

So, with no QT support…what format are these exported as?

ProRes is compressed…just FYI. But a GOOD compression. ON Windows, the good alternatives are DNxHD and Cineform. DNxHD is available from Avid.

It’s not just the GPU. 4K footage has 4x the data rate of 1080p…so you also need VERY fast drives, if your footage is ProRes or DNxHD. if H.264, then yeah, you need a better GPU. But 4K has all sorts of increased demands than 1080, so all aspects of your machine need to be taken into consideration.

And yeah, an 8 year old MacPro with 4K footage…oofie.

You are bringing in H.264…which is a highly compressed file type. And then editing, and the RECOMPRESSING it again, to H.264. That will lose quality. Any time you recompress, it’ll lose quality, and H.264 to H.264…yeah, you’ll see the difference. ProRes to H.264, you’ll see a difference. Not much you can do about that, H.264 throws away data to maintain smaller file sizes, so quality is lost.

April 23, 2018 at 6:14 pm in reply to: Adding Volume Keyframe on Multiple Clips

Keyframes on the SAME track? Yes…add keyframes to all the clips you want to lower…then mark IN and OUT to the section you want to adjust, grab one keyframe, ALL will highlight, and then raise or lower. Job mentioned this in his response.

You can also LASSO those keyframes and adjust. Just make sure not to lasso the full clips, but just the keyframes, otherwise you’ll go into TRIM mode on the cut points.

So this isn’t an anamorphic file? Not meant to be stretched out to 16:9? Because 4:3 HD is a non-standard format (well, now more standard due to Instagram)…so Premiere might not be set up for it. You can create a custom sequence that matches that format by dragging the clip onto the NEW SEQUENCE icon in the Browser.

[Oliver Peters] ” is Apple playing catch-up now to Blackmagic Design and Resolve?”

I say no. The metadata searching and organizational attributes of FCX make it a stand out app. THAT to me is more important than an NLE with pro audio page and VFX page. How many editors also do high end audio mixing PLUS high end VFX? I know that more and more we need to wear more hats, so the audio I can see…VFX, not so sure. As an editor, organization and finding footage is far more important…

Bear in mind, I haven’t seen DR15 in the flesh, as I don’t unofficially beta test.

Sorry, no. You can’t migrate a full project from Avid to Premiere…only sequences. You can’t transfer bins or any of the organization, only the sequences…and those you need the help of Resolve.

April 17, 2018 at 4:41 pm in reply to: quicktime export being cropped

QTX is a bare bones, stripped down, unfinished app. It can’t play any codec that isn’t ProRes or H.264 without converting it…it’s that bad. And Apple isn’t developing it any further…QT is dead in their eyes, and they are making AV FOUNDATION the basis for FCX…but what they intend to use as a player, not sure. For now, it’s still that stripped down QTX.

Use VLC for playback. QTX is garbage

  • If you plan on using Google Maps animations for video use, you need to get the PRO version (cost $$), and license the map animation from them…or maybe that’s what the PRO does…and you need to make sure their watermark is visible (no scaling to crop it out). At least this was the case 8 years ago. Gotta check with Google on this. Also, make sure you have a powerful enough machine…it might be a processing issue. Or browser, try different browsers. BUT…if licensed and you have the PRO, you would be able to export the map move as a QT…
