You learned one of the painful lessions of non-linear editing. Never update your system while in the middle of a project. Updating is a sticky issue. If the system is working fine…purring like a kitten, then why update? Updating can (as you found out) just lead to problems. The only time I’d recommend updating is when it is needed…such as going from 10.2.8 to 10.3.9 when you update your editing software from FCP 4.1.1 to FCP HD…since FCP HD only works with 10.3.
Now…off my soapbox. Try zapping the PRAM…restart and while the computer is starting, hold down the OPT-APPLE-P-R keys until you hear the computer’s startup tone 4 times. Then let go. Then use the Disk Utility to Repair Permissions. If none of this works, it might be time for a reinstall of FCP.

HD needs a high speed RAID. FW ain’t gonna cut it….UNLESS! Unless you are working with Panasonic DVCPRO HD…or (shiver) HDV (not really HD in my opinion).
All other flavors of HD require capture cards and high spped RAID arrays.
HD and cheap really can’t be used in the same sentence.

I use Advent Studio Monitors. When cutting video I’d only use studio monitors. JBL Soundsticks or Creative speakers with subwoofers don’t give a true representation of the audio.

No way around it. Usually the only way you get uncompressed video INTO your system is with the card…any only it can view the footage that was captured.
How are you getting the uncompressed footage?

The only way to view uncompressed footage on an external monitor is with a capture card that can view the uncompressed codec, ie a decklink card if the footage was captured with the deckink card.
Only DV footage, and DVCPRO 25, 50 and DVCPRO HD…all footage captured via firewire…are viewable thru the firewire connection.

You need to buy another copy. One copy per machine…per the Apple software agreement.
The related issues? If both machines are on a network, only one copy of FCP will work. If you install FCP on more than one machine then you are breaking your apreement with Apple, and therefore operating illegally.

All speed changes, with the exception of 200% and 50%, will need to be rendered. No card will remedy this.

Scott…DV is 720×480 and D1 is 720×486.
Just FYI.
Where is this white line? Is it consistant thru all your footage?
