For footage to be viewed out thru firewire, it needs to be in the DV/NTSC format. Any other QT format and you won’t see it.
That being said. If you have DV camera, you can route the FW thru that then RCA or S-VHS out from that to a VCR…or if you don’t have a DV camera, then look into the Canopus ADVC-100 converter. It runs about $265.

If you use 2 different formats in a timeline, you will have to render one of them…because they different formats.
If you want to work with both BetaSP and DV in the same timeline you need to capture them both at the same resolution. 8_bit uncompressed for example. Then use an 8-bit timeline and you are good to go.

OK then….
What are the resolution of your PS files? They should be 720×520 in order to work properly in FCP, due to the whole square vs rectangular thing. AND…if you are working in a DV timeline, the nice pristine PS file, when rendered, is compressed into the 5:1 DV compression scheme. This is why working in a DV space with graphics is…well…bad.
If this is going to DVD only, and not to tape, you might consider taking all your DV footage, putting it in an 8-bit uncompressed timeline, THEN adding the PS elements. 8-bit is much more graphics friendly…
Try shifting the image up one pixel…I heard that solves this sometimes…

How you you monitoring the look of your graphics? External NTSC monitor or TV?
Your computer monitor is the worse way to judge the look of your video/titles.

Keep the master tapes. The #1 best way.
Or…some have suggested buying firewire drives and storing the footage on them and putting them on a shelf. I myself think this is a waste of money, since I already have the footage on tape, and the clips logged in projects.
Since DV files are huge, using DVDs is an odd solution. It may take dozens, if not hundreds of DVDs to perform this task, and if you have huge captures (say 20-30 minute clips) they won’t even fit on a DVD.
And burning them on to a DVD as one that will playback on a DVD player is out. That HIGHLY compresses your footage.DVD’s are not the solution.
Some people use DLT drives, or some form of software/hardware solution that backs up the footage as data on a miniDV tape.
Just keep the masters.

It is also called Time Remap in FCP.
Look it up in the manual.

This is all because HDV is a highly compressed MPEG-2 format. That format has special needs…such as re-encoding the information before outputting to tape.
Not to knock you, but HDV is not the best format to work with. Maybe to shoot with, as long as you capture it with an HD card and not it’s native format, and then output to another form of HD. And the reasons you listed are a few of the reasons not to. No output without re-compression….exporting to DVD takes DAYS….and no veiwing on an external monitor…without special gear.

The fact that the Video and Audio are automically linked bothers me. For the exact reason this thread was started. I want to move my video separate from my audio all the time. if I wanted both, I’d shift click…
Can’t disable that function…as much as I’d like to.
