1. Your timecode format on the tape MUST match the format of your timeline. In Avid land, it wouldn’t even attempt the output. I am amazed that FCP allows you to try. It is always advisable to use drop frame code. The only time I ever see non-drop code is on camera masters. Edit masters…ALWAYS Drop Frame.
2. Are you sure your IN and OUT points are set correctly?

The only thing you gain by getting a decklink is the ability to capture SDI or Component or Composite in the 8-bit and 10-bit formats.
Working with DV only via firewire…outputting to DVD? You don’t need it.

Or, the nice cheap, low rent but very workable way to go about it is to have both cameras, when they hit record, point at a guy who claps. A slate would be nice, but a hand clap works rather well. Keep in mind that if one camera starts, then stops, then starts again, sync will be lost. But if they both start and stop at the same time…then you should be set.

Export an EDL from your 23.98 timeline. Use Cinema Tools to convert that 23.98 EDL into a 29.97 EDL. Recapture the footage at 29.97. Output.

You can’t edit HDVs native format with FCP HD. You will need to get lumiereHD to convert the footage and compress it to work with FCP 4.5. FCP 5 does work with HDV nativel.
BUT…if your other footage is DV, and you will stay in a DV environment, then you can downconvert the HDV footage to DV right out of the camera…then you can work with all the footage DV and things wil work fine.

The differences between the AJA and the Decklink products is minimal. VERY minimal. You will find pros on both sides that swear to both. The Decklink Extreme and the AJA I/O are similarly priced (when you add the break out box to the decklink) and both will do you well.
Both have SDI, component, composite and s-video In/Out solutions
The Decklink has an advantage in terms of cost. The Decklink Extreme costs a mere $895….The Aja I/O costs $2000. You can get non SDI options for $1100 with the I/O LA or LD.
The advantage that the AJA I/O has is that you don’t have to install it in the G5…it connects to the system via firewire. Thus you can use this one capture device on several machines, instead of relegating it to one.
The Kona 2 is more expensive for the simple reason that is does both HD and SD captures.
But with any of these you are now looking at faster drives…SATA Raids are a good place to start.

I think that most people running FCP 5 are using it with Tiger. Some are sticking with 10.3.9 , but most are using FCP 5 with Tiger….

Yes, that is always wise. Install the OS and the FCP application with nothing connected other than the Monitor, Mouse and Keyboard. That is the usual tip from the tech support people…

What is your particular hardware? What computer are you using? How much RAM? What version of Tiger? Have you upgraded to the most current versions of the OS and FCP 5?
