Mass hardware confusion, IO? Kona? BlackMagic? grrr.. am I this dense..
So I have been reading the boards for hours now and I think I managed to confuse myself more than help myself…
I have a G5 tower FCP5 edit station that I mainly work on short form projects. I have a 1/2″ Deck, DSR25, BetaCam Deck and 20″ Sony Pro Monitor. I am looking at a way to route and get stuff in and out without endlessly repatching.. until now I have not been able to afford more than just my manual patching. So I am ready to splurge to make this station more workflow ready.. I really would like to go in and out of the G5 as I please without repatching.. I get material on all formats and often have to output on all formats as well..
Thanks for any sage advice from all the pro’s out there..

The differences between the AJA and the Decklink products is minimal. VERY minimal. You will find pros on both sides that swear to both. The Decklink Extreme and the AJA I/O are similarly priced (when you add the break out box to the decklink) and both will do you well.
Both have SDI, component, composite and s-video In/Out solutions
The Decklink has an advantage in terms of cost. The Decklink Extreme costs a mere $895….The Aja I/O costs $2000. You can get non SDI options for $1100 with the I/O LA or LD.
The advantage that the AJA I/O has is that you don’t have to install it in the G5…it connects to the system via firewire. Thus you can use this one capture device on several machines, instead of relegating it to one.
The Kona 2 is more expensive for the simple reason that is does both HD and SD captures.
But with any of these you are now looking at faster drives…SATA Raids are a good place to start.

we are going to assume that everything you have is Standard Def. then look at the AJA io – anything in / and everything out is always live. The AJA hardware boards offer some added functions – like the ability to read other hardware codecs – but the Io is a workhorse.it comes in 3 flavors -Analog ports, digital ports and one that does both.

sorry in advance if i’m misreading this.
it sounds like you have two issues here.
1. you’re trying to decide on a capture card … and either of the two you mention will serve you well
2. you don’t want to endlessly patch … well, if you have multiple decks, i think you’re still going to have to do some patching somewhere along the line. if you have the money to ease the pain you might look into getting yourself a patchbaybest
