Scale the footage in Premiere. It does a very good job. You will be hard pressed to see the difference, honestly.

What have you tried thus far? Compressor? How about EditReady?

Because Apple cares more about battery life and nifty swipe bars than actual performance. They are solidly going after consumers…and really only caring how their stuff works with FCX.

Well, there are other formats that are 10 bit that Premiere works with fine…ProRes is 10-bit, and many DNxHD formats are 10-bit. Just know that working with 4K H.264 video in real time (it’s a very complex format) will require a pretty beefy system. 32GB of RAM at least, very high end CPU and Graphics cards to decode this on the fly.

April 8, 2017 at 8:42 pm in reply to: Relinking from externally transcoded proxy media to camera original filesDid you first populate the Media Pool with the camera masters, and then import the AAF? Take the Proxies offline when you do this.
But…
[Peter Price] “when I tried relinking to High Res, or doing any type of conform, it kept giving me an error saying that the camera media and the proxy media timecode didn’t match.”
This might be a problem. Check the masters and the proxies and see if the timecodes match, or if they indeed don’t match. If they don’t match, then you won’t be able to relink…that’ll be a major issue.

[Daniele Peri] “I tried using Premiere Pro CC and I have not this problem, it’s very strange”
Because PPRo does’t make separate media when you import..it simply links to the picture. Did you try dropping the Avid Pan and Zoom on the timeline, and then linking to the still in that interface? That mimics how Premiere brings in pictures.
And what codec did you import as? What are your MEDIA CREATION SETTINGS for imports?

April 8, 2017 at 8:21 pm in reply to: Relinking from externally transcoded proxy media to camera original files[Peter Price] “My question is, how do I relink that DNxHR proxy media back to the camera original footage for online use. “
You can’t in Avid, because you made them outside of Avid.
But…you know that:
[Peter Price] “I know that if I had transcoded the media in Avid, and did a Consolidate and Transcode with AMA linked media, I would be able to relink with ease, “
Correct. If you did this in Avid, then Avid would know what the source material is that’s linked to the proxies. Because it was done outside of Avid, you can’t relink.
[Peter Price] “but I’m curious, with externally transcoded proxies, how do I reliably link those proxies, back to the camera raw files.”
By doing it in the application that you made the proxies…Resolve. Export an AAF from Avid, import that into Resolve, relink to the camera masters, and then finish in Resolve, or transcode them to a higher res format and send that back to Avid to finish.
[Peter Price] “Is it not possible to relink externally transcoded media to it’s original raw file, within Avid?”
Not unless you AMA linked and transcoded within Avid.

Do you have any elements in the sequence that are over 4000 pixels in size? Picture files, graphics? You get that error if anything is over 4000 pixels…most often.

What are your project settings? And what Media Creation settings did you use for this? When you import, it compresses it into Avid media, with the media creation type set up in Media Creation. So it won’t be as sharp as your original. One thing to try is to use Pan & Zoom and link to the picture. That typically results in better quality.
