  • Yes…REMOTE means it will be controlled by an outside source, like FCP.

Yea, sorry, that’s for DECK CONTROL, and even then, Avid needs to be in the foreground.

Nope. Avid needs to be in the foreground to be controlled. There is no controller that can access ONLY Avid while you have another app in the foreground. Sorry, that’s just a basic computer function. The app in the foreground get’s all the love and attention, and the one in the background does it’s thing until you get IT attention.

    It’s an OS thing

I admit inexperience with this specific workflow. I haven’t had to deal with bringing in that file type. SO I can only guess. How about checking the option to convert the audio? that might bring it over.

  • Is this footage SD or HD? What is the frame size? 720×360? 1280×720? 1920×1080? And what are your SEQUENCE settings? (CMD-0…or Sequence menu…settings) What are those dimensions?

  • In the WINDOW menu in FCP, you should see TIMELINE listed. Select it.

The difference is that if you push in 10% on your 4K footage…you are making that footage larger…you are ZOOMING IN on it. Image quality degrades when you enlarge the image beyond 100%.

Now…if that 4K footage was in a 1080p sequence…that 4K footage…isn’t scaled fully. It isn’t 100% size. You’ve scaled it to fit, so it might be like 250% size, for example. So if you need to enlarge it…you’ll still be less than 100%. You might get to 55%…60%. Quality is still good…no degredation. It’s not larger than 100%.

Better to have 4K in a 1080 sequence and push in than enlarge the 4K image by 10% then downcovert.

[Lena Gregorian] “it’s MXF OP Atom, so this files are shown at Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1, and they in did show in my project. “

    OK…good.

[Lena Gregorian] ” I choose the DNxHR, is it a good choice to go back to ONLINE from?
    “

Yes, that’s the DNxHR low res offline codec.

[Lena Gregorian] “I have MXF on my hard disk (I expected high quality of DNx files)”

You can’t expect…you need to KNOW. WHAT are they? What camera made these? What recorder was used? There are more then one format of MXF…Are they OP1a? OP Atom? OP Atom are the separate files that make one clip…separate video and audio files…and THIS is the Avid media that resides in the Avid MediaFiles>MXF>1 folder. Op1a are single clips that contain video and audio…this is typically what cameras that record MXF record as…or what files are delivered as in a final delivery. If you have Op1a files…you can’t just drop them into the MXF>1 folder and bam, they are there. These need to be accessed via AMA and then CONSOLIDATED (or transcoded to offline res)…that will convert them into the OP Atom MXF file type and put them into the Avid media file structure.

[Lena Gregorian] ” It’s been a while since my last project as AE, and after having the files at Avid MediaFile/MXF/1 (on the folder I’ve created by after importing demo file), the MXF won’t show in my project. “

So you AMA linked, or Source Browser linked and consolidated? Is that how this was made? The CLIP in your bin, the thing that you link to, or the consolidated clip..THAT is what is linked to the MXF file…that is the clip. If you just dropped MXF files into the MXF>1 folder…that won’t suddenly populate your project with clips. No…you need to bring the footage in properly. AMA link, or use the Source browser to link to the footage, and then transcode.

[Lena Gregorian] “Now I see that when importing a demo file into avid it created a folder “Creating” and I wonder if this one and the other files: msmFMID.prm and msmMMOB.mdb are necessary for this, as my HD did not include any of this, and only MXF’s.”

The prm and mdb files are the DATABASE files…the mdb file specifically is the Media DataBase file. You can delete these and Avid re-creates them…because it needs them to track the footage. These are created whenever you populate the MXF folder with media. If you make a new bin, and drag the mdb file into it…it will populate that bin with all the footage in that numbered folder. All the footage it is tracking.

Can you please lay out the exact workflow you are using? I’m afraid you might be doing several things incorrectly.

They dont’ need FCP 7….just a Mac. You can get a MacMini to do this if you want. Or, if this is a rare occurance, hire someone. But a Mini can do this.
