Greg, I may not be understanding you exactly right, but, (in Illustrator) could you draw your artwork with the pen tool, outline your stroke, then add the tapered ends to the line terminals?

Option 1:
Research the topic clipping masks and you’ll be headed in the right direction.

Option 2:
Use blending modes in your transparency palette

Option 3:
Import a image type that supports a transparent (alpha) channel

I’m not sure I understand what you are asking? If you need edges and ornamentation found in currency, you can do a search for certificate templates. Some people sell some nice borders for that sort of thing.

I don’t have the time to try it right now, but could you make a custom brush (or custom shape) with your watermark and set that in your action to be positioned at the correct location.

Hot reds are especially difficult to reach in newspaper. CMYK has a much more limited color gamut because you are mixing pigments (print). RGB is mixing light (monitor).
