If you are using the Starfield plug-in make sure you choose “Single Dots” from the “Star Shape” menu.
It sounds like you have it on Glowing.Does this help?

Hi,
Try disabling “Auto Resize” for your effects palette. (Top Right arrow in your effects window. While you are at it, kill the Show Animation Pressets also!)
