In the end I took it to the Canon shop and they repaired it. It was the CCD which they replaced. It cost about 800 US (600 EUR) but I figured it was worth it (just).
Works fine now.

That’s what I’ve done – I got it repaired (in Rome actually by the Canon people) and it’s all good now!

Why do you say that?
(I downloaded a copy and am playing with it today. First impressions are that it looks very nice and has a couple of nice features such as cut scenes being ‘pasted’ to the desktop. But it’s annoying me because it doesn’t work like Vegas which is unfair of me. Oh, and there appear to be very few plugins.)

I thought it physically copied the media so I’ve been avoiding them all this time!

That is a possibility but there are *loads* of reactions shots and making subclips is a bit of a laborious process; it’s a pity one can’t drag a clip from the timeline into a bin.
And also, correct me if I’m wrong, but creating subclips actually copies the media and this is going to use up disk space.
If it were possible I was after a solution which would (effectively) store a reference to the region in a bin and show that particular region only (not the whole clip).
