I’ve been a great fan and advocate of SV for many years. Very intuitive and good results. But more recently I’m finding it a bit bloated and each new version seems to slow down on my PC and require more hardware.

A friend of mine suggested I take a look at Lightworks which, apart from anything else, is free.

Just wondering if anyone here had tried Lightworks and whether it compares favourably or not to SV. Their advertising seems to recommend it as an alternative to SV but I’d like to hear a few opinions first.

Heard about it and read up on it, but it aint no
    replacement for Vegas.

But you can download it and test it for yourself.

It’s free, documented and the forum appears friendly. Totally different to Vegas. I gave it a trial about 12 months back running under XP but did not find it intuative. My Grandson however uses it daily for his work and swears by it. This time running W7.

I think you will have to bite the bullet and trial it. Just Google Lightworks and download. If I remember correctly you are required to register prior to downloading but no $$s required.

Let us know how you get on.

Still, if i were seeking a replacement for Vegas, i would
    not go for Lightworks.

    Why do you say that?

(I downloaded a copy and am playing with it today. First impressions are that it looks very nice and has a couple of nice features such as cut scenes being ‘pasted’ to the desktop. But it’s annoying me because it doesn’t work like Vegas which is unfair of me. Oh, and there appear to be very few plugins.)

What do you mean by why do i say that?

Haven’t you yourself answered part of it?

I mean why wouldn’t *you* choose Lightworks as a replacement for Vegas.

The jury is still out for me.

Well let the jury remain out for you on that one then, and
switch to Lightworks…i dont know what possibly you want
me to tell you more than the obvious.

I’m afraid you’ve lost me completely, Steve. I’m just after opinions here; you say you wouldn’t use it (fair enough) so I’m wondering why.

Anyway, if anyone else has used it feel free to chime in.

Because you are an obvious Vegas expert and we are interested. What makes you reject it?

No, I as well would like you to tell me the obvious.

Seriously I am not winding you up and I think neither is Sean. You are a registered Vegas expert, and we want to know why you have misgivings.

I for one have paid for Vegas (albeit on.y Studio Plat). But if a far better (well, more suitable to MY needs) product came along, free or not, I would be looking at it.

But so often a product looks good up front then falls over in the detail. So maybe “the obvious” is not what we are asking about at all. A short trial may not be enough.

It sounds as if you know more.

    Nick
