  • Our goal was to take Beta SP SD 720×486 4:3 to HD 1920×1080 30p. In order to do this I used a ProRes 1920×1080 HD setting in Compressor and changed a few parameters to get the tech results I wanted.

Like Shane said, HD 4:3 is not an option. You will be laying in a 4:3 video into a 16:9 space, thus creating letter boxes on the sides called pillar boxes.

  • I just take one of their presets and “mod” it as needed. I may end up with 4-6 variations that I then test and look at the quality difference vs. compression time and file size to see what works best overall.

You may find that you can’t use 2 of the spatial parameters as it will yeild an error and not render. Google to find the full story.

I found this to be a non-issue and always get great, but slow, results from compressor.

  • Thanks for the good info Shane.

In my case, I have a BMD DeckLink Studio 2 and did a 3 way test for some BetaCam SP to HD conversions. BMD real time hardware conversion, AE scale to HD, and Compressor. I analyzed all of the still frames and Compressor looked the best.

BMD was almost as good, but I could only go from 29.97 to 59.94 in order to use the hardware. My client wanted 30p so I couldn’t use that method.

  • Our workflow has always been to first, convert all SD digital files to HD using compressor. This makes editing much easier and faster, AND the quality seems to be better using compressor conversion than any other method I’ve tried. The only negative is it takes a long time to render the conversions. But this has to be done somewhere, and hopefully not in your edit timeline.

    Thanks Shane.

I did find out that my DeckLink Studio 2 card will do realtime uprez, but with Desktop Video 9.52, there is no pillar box option so it is stretching my 4:3 to fill 16:9. And of course you must match frame rate of SD29.97 to HD 59.94 to digitize. Without that, Media Express won’t see your input source.

I did a quick test with the realtime uprez file, a AE uprez, and yes Compressor had the best quality so I went that rout. It just took 24hrs to render.

Yikes – glad I read this. Was about to upgrade and test FCP X.

Exactly Tom. What’s funny are the people running from Apple and FCP7 and X to some other NLE. They can’t see past their noses.

Just think, only 2-3 months ago, many FCP7 users went to NLE’s because X didn’t have multi-cam editing, XML, and monitor output. By the time they did their research, reconfig the computer, learn the software, etc…. FCP has already passed them up.

    No problem, don’t worry.

The only issue is that FCP 7’s Log & Trans does not recognize 60p and probably the slo-mo stuff on the card or card image on the HD.

All you need to do is convert the 60p footage to a format that FCP does recognize and IMPORT FILE.

I use clip wrap to turn the .MTS file to .MOV (QuickTime). I then use Cinema Tools to conform to 24p or 30p for amazing slo-mo.

I’m not sure if there is any need to edit a 60p time line, but that’s up to you.

    Good luck!

I would never resize/scale an entire project in a FCPX or 7 time line.

Why not use Compressor? All settings pass-through except frame size. This is what I’ve been using to go from 1080p to either 720p or 480i.
