  • Downscale from 2k to SD

Well I finally finished my drama doc and need to put to tape… my plan to downsize (as I don’t have a hardware option) is to export my 2k cut less titles and downscale to SD Anamorphic 10 bit uncompressed in After effects… then I’ll bring this file into an sd anamorphic timeline in fcp x where I’ll paste all the titles back in and export out (10 bit uncompressed)… I’ll bring this into fcp7 for output to digibeta..
Make sense as a software solution? Would it be as good to just do the downscaling in fcp x or using compressor?
Rendering as I type but still time for changes 🙂
    Thanks,
    Johnny

AE isn’t all that for downscaling material. Your solution should work but sounds very time-consuming. I’d just use FCP7 directly on your 2K-file. Be sure to set the file interlace property to “none”, put it in a anamorphic SD timeline with the same setting and apply the “Flicker filter” under “Video”. Set it to max.

Scaling interlaced-footage can end up looking like garbage in FCP (or any application for that matter). Also a problem with downscaling is getting too sharp image on TVs / monitors and thus introducing a lot of flickering from all the aliasing.

[Erik Lindahl] “I’d just use FCP7 directly on your 2K-file.”
    I would never do that.
Sorry to disagree but FCP is well known for making a very poor downscaling, even when setting “Render Motion Effects: BEST”.
I made a test for downscaling comparing FCP and FCPX.
FCPX makes a better job, but don’t use the “FIT” function. Downscale it manually.
In any case I would make a test comparing FCPX with Compressor with the “Frame Control ON” and the resizing filter set to BEST.
If you have the opportunity to do it in SHAKE, that would be great. Still the best downscaling you can get in a Mac as far as I know.

I would never resize/scale an entire project in a FCPX or 7 time line.

Why not use Compressor? All settings pass-through except frame size. This is what I’ve been using to go from 1080p to either 720p or 480i.
