I have to rent an HDCam SR machine once in a while for about $1k a day. The thought that instead of SR tape, I could have been given a vastly superior format (REDCODE) on a cheap hard drive – well it just seems so silly.

I remember when the RED One was announced. At no point were they ever dishonest about what you do and don’t get for your $17,500.

I do this a lot. It depends on the material. 95% of the time I just drop the audio. If it’s comedic material, a bleep may be appropriate. But most of the time a bleep is a huge distraction that draws attention to the fact they are swearing more than anything else.

Haven’t used an Avid in a while. Does it let you reconnect to files that have different framerates, different reel names, different in and out points, different resolutions, etc.? I’m going to guess it doesn’t (I really don’t know though).
I find that no matter how badly a user mangles his or her media, Final Cut is so powerful in this regard that being able to relink any media to any clip is priceless. It also lets you do unconventional that can save a ton of time and effort. Recently I explained to someone here how instead of converting an EDL from 29.97 to 23.98, in Final Cut you can instead run the media through Cinema Tools, modify the timecode back to 30 NDF format, and reconnect it pretty flawlessly.
I just prefer that Quicktime files are managed through by the user through the OS like regular files are. I don’t want the NLE software taking over in that regard.

Toast 9 should be out soon. It allows Blu-ray video disc creation. I don’t know if you can do complex menus or other features, but for client discs I’m sure it’ll do the job.

Unplug it and take the battery out, and make sure no USB or FW devices are plugged into it. Wait like 10 seconds. Plug it in but do not put the battery back in. If this doesn’t change the behavior, take it to an Apple Store and hopefully they’ll be able to at least identify the problem without charging you.
That’s what I would do at least.

I’ve never had any of any of those problems unless reel names weren’t properly given.
I’m also a Media 100 alumni. Back than at least (version 8 was my last) Media 100 only worked with one codec, one frame rate, one resolution, etc. You couldn’t manually change timecode numbers or reconnect media. So I think it’s a bit of an “apples vs. oranges” to compare it with FCP, which is ridiculously more powerful and can work with anything Quicktime can understand. With great power comes great responsibility. Media Manager’s complexity is required for smoothly dealing with all the format possibilities.
One thing I agree with the other comments though is that there should be an option to proportionately change the motion settings automatically for stills and such when going from SD to HD, like how Avid does it.

“Media Manager sucks” gets mentioned a lot around here like it’s some kind of political talking point. Your’s is the first time I’ve heard it in a while. I still don’t understand what’s supposedly wrong with it.

There is a high-end MPEG encoder that was just released for the Mac and works with Compressor. I forgot the name but it’s mentioned in this forum sometime in the last week.
