  • Need help with 720p24 workflow to SD DVD

    Hi all!

I’m using FCP 5.1.4 and am finishing editing a feature-length documentary that was shot with a JVC HD100U in 720p24. Anyways, I had no problem logging and capturing 720p24 footage and editing it on my G5, but now need to burn it onto a SD DVD while retaining decent quality (I know it can’t look immaculate on a SD DVD). My question is, what exactly is the workflow for doing so?

Here’s what I tried: I copied the 720p24 timeline, created a new sequence with an editing timebase of 29.97 and QT video settings to DVCPRO50-NTSC, pasted it into the new sequence and let it render overnight. The next morning I took a look at the newly rendered DVCPRO50 timeline and there are all sorts of little problems with it. The sound is off on some shots, while in sync in others, different footage is in certain shots than what I originally had it set at and even the V.O.s will occasionally be altered to repeat certain words or phrases. In a word, it’s a mess. I could go through and try to fix all the little problems but I’m wondering if I’m doing things the right way?

My next step would’ve been to send the DVDPRO50 through Compressor (at a setting I’m not sure of) and burn it onto a SD DVD via DVDSP. Is this the proper workflow? And, if not, what is? Also, what settings should I use in Compressor and do I need to change around anything in DVDSP before burning it?

Thanks, I know that’s a lot but I would really appreciate any help and/or advice!

Simply export a reference movie out of FCP and take that file into compressor.

Once in compressor setup/modify an MPEG-2 preset that has a frame rate of 23.98. SD DVDs can take 23.98 movies and the NTSC DVD player will add 3:2 pulldown to your 23.98 movie for available viewing on traditional TV sets. Very easy and no reason to convert to an SD sequence first.

nesting the sequence like that to downconvert size and framerate will not give you the results you want.

just export your timeline to a self contained quicktime file, and duplicate one of compressors presets.

set the resize filter for best quality.

Listen to Jeremy. DVDs can be 23.98, and always should be when the source is.
