censoring Audio
Posted by Nick Esposito on April 21, 2008 at 5:50 pmHi,
I have to censor audio and replace it with the BLeep tone.
What are the specs for this tone?
Is there a tool in FCP that generates this tone? Thanks!
Cheers!

April 21, 2008 at 5:58 pmI don’t think there’s a set standard.
I always use the tone that’s part of the color bars. Which is what, 1000 Hz, right? Anyway, it’s easy and seems to work.

April 21, 2008 at 6:44 pmHey Nick I sometimes will just drop the audio out al together, if I don’t have M&E tracks to sub with. I think in some cases its less intrusive.
A cut is a cut & a dissolve is a disolve, and not just anybody with a system is a pro.

April 21, 2008 at 8:23 pmI do this a lot. It depends on the material. 95% of the time I just drop the audio. If it’s comedic material, a bleep may be appropriate. But most of the time a bleep is a huge distraction that draws attention to the fact they are swearing more than anything else.

April 21, 2008 at 9:20 pmI think Deadliest Catch which has some pretty “salty sailor” language has done the best with explicatives. Covering the audio with fishing background effects, may not work in your situation.
