    Why do you feel the need to add pulldown prior to that? It should be done when outputting to tape. Not before. Are they use Avid Meridian or Media 100 v7 or something? Any editing system made this decade can handle 23.976 footage.

    There’s a lot of options. Not sure what I’m going to do. Using a G5 does look more promising than in the recent past. I see all the new SATA cards support port multipliers, which is interesting. And I just found is that ZFS is unofficially available on the current Leopard. Apple provides the source code and there is a community that builds installers for it.

    Then there’s the whole Time Machine thing. I’m thinking of turning a FreeNAS server into a giant Time Machine disk for backing up media. Lots to think about.

    It’s a stripped-down version of FreeBSD (which is what OSX is loosely based on). There is no graphic desktop environment. That’s why it’s so small. No icons, no wallpaper, no web browser, no apps whatsoever. The machine itself gives you a simple text menu to set the IP addresses and such. Then you connect to it over the network and there is a web-based graphic interface to control it all. Here’s a screenshot of the Web interface:

    If you really need it now, then there is no option to wait and the conversation is moot. But if you can wait, you should.

    The i7 will provide more raw processing power. Rendering on current software will be faster. Intel has brought back Hyperthreading, so an octo-core will show up as being sixteen cores, and Compressor already can take full advantage of this.

    It’s not like getting a new graphics card or downloading the latest version of Quicktime. If it’s the same architecture, CPUs always work with the old software.

    Not really. The i7 is a major milestone. For the same money you’d pay today, in a few months you’ll get a vastly more powerful machine.

    I too have an HP DreamColor. The mini-DisplayPort on the Macbook is NOT the same thing as regular DisplayPort found on the HP. Apple created their own mini version of the connector, and an adapter cable will be required to plug a new Macbook into the HP’s DisplayPort. Sort of like when they had their own custom “mini-DVI” connector on the Powerbooks.

    When footage is shot at 24fps and then converted to 60i, it does this conversion using 3:2 pulldown (google it). Every 3 frames of 24p video is converted to 10 interlaced fields, and there is a specific pattern called cadence.

    When you edit this footage in a 30fps sequence in final cut, you destroy that pattern and applications like Cinema Tools will not know how to convert it back to 24p.

    Bad cadence makes video very difficult or impossible to deinterlace properly. Deinterlacing is essential for watching video on the web. Otherwise it looks like garbage.

    Notice how horrible the IMDB version looks. Apple doesn’t want their videos looking like that, hence the reason why they rejected yours.

    The FCP manual does not warn of this even though tons of video cameras shoot 24p. And the vast majority of black-belt editors I know (as well as some of the floating heads you see above) do not understand this concept nor it’s importance. I’m always nagging people about this, so I feel a little more justified now.

    If there was an easy answer to your problem, I’d tell you. You can check out JES Deinterlace (google for free download) which does inverse telecine with automatic cadence detection. This amazing feature could save your ass, but it doesn’t always catch them all. You may have to rebuild your project with 24p media on a 24p sequence.

    FYI, there is a way to cheat. You can use JES or Compressor and convert it to 30p. Bad edits will be masked by line doubling. Unfortunately Digibeta doesn’t do 30p. Maybe you can deliver as a file?

    FreeNAS is not an application you run on your Mac. It is an operating system specifically designed to turn a computer into a storage appliance. Instead of using a Macintosh computer to serve the storage, you instead use a server-grade PC with SATA disks attached and FreeNAS running as the system disk. But rather than using a hard drive as the system disk, FreeNAS is so small you can install it on a USB thumb drive. FreeNAS could run on an Intel Mac using Boot Camp, but that would of course defeat the purpose.

    Once the FreeNAS server is set up, you connect to it using AFP on your Macintosh workstation. Just like you would connect to another Mac.

    Yes, FreeNAS was the reason AFP performance was weak. However, just today I tried the latest alpha version and AFP performance was pretty good. AJA System Test showed 70MB/s write, 100MB/s read. Before it was something like 20MB/s. But since it’s an alpha I’m not about to deploy it. Something to try again in the future.

    All I’m trying to do is make the most out of the hardware I already have. There are 3 editors, possibly 5 in the near future.

    In regards to the topic I started, I’m about to give FreeNAS another go since there have been new versions of it, and I was curious if anyone else had tried it. If it doesn’t work out I’ll consider turning a G5 into a server and share it over AFP, as you’ve suggested.
