Doesn’t Apple typically delay shipping of products if they’re just about to release new ones?

We may want to buy some new Mac Pro’s before the end of the year for a tax write off – but it’s pretty certain i7 based Mac’s will be announced at Macworld. Hasn’t Apple done this before where the last week or so they “delay” your shipment so you get the new box not the old? Or am I completely nuts.

    Aaron,

Technology sales are abysmal. I’ll bet Apple is sitting on oodles of their current MacPros. In this economy I wouldn’t count on anything based upon past performance.

Apple doesn’t typically do anything. They release the box when they are ready, MacWorld or no MacWorld.

Usually MacWorld is more consumer oriented and the new Mac Pro’s are released around the WWDC. But again, they’ll release them when they are ready to release them.

The new Intel Core i7 chips just came out and the Xeon version is due Q1 2009. Bet your ass there will be new Mac Pros announced at MacWorld.

    I would wait.

buy what you need today, today.

you will get something that works, and is more than adequate for the tasks at hand

(even if apple ships new designed boxes tomorrow, what makes you think the software will be ready? especially FCP?)

in some ways, my father’s great adage makes sense here:

    “Take pie while its passing!”

“I like video because its so fast!”

Not really. The i7 is a major milestone. For the same money you’d pay today, in a few months you’ll get a vastly more powerful machine.

It doesn’t work that way. Software will work just as it always has.

Yes really. Bob is right, get what you need to day. In a few months you will have earned income on your new box and then you can get another upgrade when the time comes.

You can always “wait a few months” or you can just get your new box now and then replace it in 6 months if the new box comes out. It’s a never-ending cycle so if you need a new computer today, buy a new computer today. It’s just a computer.

Bob’s point is FCP will not be ready to take advantage of any new improvements in the computer the day it comes out unless Studio 3 ships on the same day and even then, who knows since the software will have been tested by a handful of people. Until FCP has been overhauled from ground up, all these new advances in the computers seem to just go to the Adobe Suite.

Come on Walter, that’s ridiculous. Sean’s got a good point. Buying a new Mac the month before the new ones historically ship is just downright goofy, unless of course the deal is so good it can’t be passed-up.

Ok, if you’re going to quote “history,” then you’ll know that MacWorld is typically a consumer driven show with iMacs, iPods and maybe new laptops shown.

You’ll also know that the WWDC (in June) is more of a “pro hardware” show where the new desktop is typically shown off.

For the past several years, Apple has released the new MacBook Pro in tandem with NAB in April.

Nothing ridiculous about getting the equipment you need right, today and not waiting on what Apple wants to do. I have a new Mac Pro and a 24 TB shared storage system already ordered and will be delivered here on Dec. 29. Why? Because we start our first feature documentary on January 5th and I want all three systems up and running before we start that.

I could tell my client, “you know what, there’s some folks on the Creative Cow who think I should just sit here and wait until after MacWorld so if you don’t mind, can we delay the edit by a few weeks so we can see what happens, and then I’ll make up my mind on what to order? I mean I know your first feature is due in April and we have three more to do immediately after, but what the heck, it’ll just delay everything by about three weeks.”

    Now THAT would be ridiculous.

Fortunately I don’t too many ridiculous things or my company would not have experienced the tremendous growth we’ve had over the past four years.

If you don’t need it today, wait. If you need something today, get it, earn some money and replace it with the latest shiny box in a few months.

If you really need it now, then there is no option to wait and the conversation is moot. But if you can wait, you should.

The i7 will provide more raw processing power. Rendering on current software will be faster. Intel has brought back Hyperthreading, so an octo-core will show up as being sixteen cores, and Compressor already can take full advantage of this.

It’s not like getting a new graphics card or downloading the latest version of Quicktime. If it’s the same architecture, CPUs always work with the old software.

Yes I’m talking about when the new MacPro’s coming out again…

    Why?

Because I’m waiting for the new tower to come out before I buy a new computer.

    Why?

Because I don’t “need” a new tower…I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT ONE!!!

This article got me pretty fired up and I thought I’d see if people think it sounds legit or not.
