The same is true for DV50. You lose quality when the video is re-encoded for anything that isn’t cuts-only.
There is a way to avoid this though. Once you’re done editing, you can render everything on an uncompressed sequence. This process does not re-encode the DV25 or DV50 codec. It reads the orignal pre-effects media directly and creates new uncompressed media. So if you master to BetaSP or Digibeta, this is the way to go.

Well, that all depends. BetaSP is uncompressed quality – but analog. A lot of places still ask for things delivered on BetaSP.

If you’re concerned about quality, going through a DVCam deck and using it’s component outputs is a bad idea.
I assume your Media 100 has component output.
Here’s what I’d do. Capture using the DV50 codec over firewire. When the edit is finished, output the sequence using the Media 100 lossless codec. They JUST made their codec openly available for anyone to use without the need for their hardware. You can download it from their site.
Then just open up that exported file on the Media 100 box and output to Beta.

You’re right. Apple has gone downhill in this regard no doubt about it. From the company that says “It Just Works”, it can get annoying.
To fix your Safari problems, call your ISP and get your DNS server addresses and manually enter them into the Network System Prefs. That fixed my problem as well as many others. It sucks but it’s better than waiting 3 minutes for a page to load.
I haven’t had spotlight problems. And as far as malicious code for Dashboard – that’s just being paranoid. Nothing like that ever on Macs.

It’s not officially supported and personally, I had a bad experience with it. 10.3.8 was fine for me.

Does this include the whole bundle Studio package? I preordered that. I’d hate to have to wait longer just because Motion 2 or Studio Pro 4 isn’t ready.

I don’t usually make mistakes like this. No, Tiger will not write to NTFS. I was wrong. I thought the drive I tried NTFS but it was really FAT32. I apologize if I started a bogus rumor.

Think of XML or any metadata like a spreadsheet. While other NLEs use XML, the tables and the way it’s organized are totally different from one another. One program might record audio keyframes as percentage while another uses dB values. One program could count frames while another uses SMTPE timecode. In other words, they’re not compatible.
Automatic Duck’s products are the result of the painstaking task of matching them up combined with the technical know-how to make it work. They make an importer for Premiere Pro, but no exporter. Premiere can natively export AAF files and Automatic Duck made a free AAF importer for Final Cut that is hidden on Apple’s website. But from my personal testing it’s not a reliable way to move timelines from Premiere to FCP whatsoever. It doesn’t always work and the reasons why are hard to nail down. Furthemore, AAF in this situation is pretty much cuts only – so the benfits over EDL are non-existant.
I looked into this because I have a PC at home and wanted to bring projects home. But when you think about it, the cost of PPro plus the cost of automatic duck, it’s not worth it. Plus, Premiere Pro is so similar to FCP that the little differences between the two become very annoying for some reason. It’s like driving your wife’s car. Everything’s the same until you want to turn on the wipers. Then you get really annoyed.
I’m just going to buy a MacMini instead.

I hear you. Sounds terrible. Forgive me if you already know this, but you can change the preroll time. I’ve run into this problem before. I changed the preroll to 1 second and it worked. Go into your device control settings.

Being able to reconnect any media has huge advantages and one of the biggest reasons of why I like FCP so much.
I learned this the hard way too – don’t ever change the names of clips. There’s a nice blank field called “Description” to name and organize your clips. Just use that from now on and leave the actual clip name alone. You run into all kinds of weird problems when the clip name differs from the media file name.
As far as fixing your project, I’m a little overwhelmed by your post. It sounds like you completely lost the relationship between your offline clips and their corresponding media files because you changed the clip names. I know it sucks, but you may be best off just going through one at a time and checking each one. Or just throw away the media and batch capture from tape if you can.
