Thanks for the encouragement guys! Me and my co-workers used to be just like these Avid guys, only with Media 100 instead of Avid. $2000 a pop just to be able to use OSX instead of OS9 is what caused us to switch.
The story has a happy ending though. The online editor (geez, I hope they don’t read this:)) did a 180 and suddenly became engaged in the idea of trying something new. He worked up the courage to install the BMD codec and imported a sample clip I put on our FTP. He said it came in quickly and worked perfectly. So it looks like it’s all gonna work out.

What do you mean exactly? In After Effects you pick whatever codec you want to render to. In Final Cut you do the same.

A DV stream is 25 mbps. A Firewire bus is 400 mbps. It should work rather easilly. I myself never had a problem. But what should work and what does work are two different things.

Keep in mind, if your source is DV, and your final output is either DVD or DV, there’s no benefit for editing in uncompressed.

A 5.5 video shouldn’t take anywhere near that long. You need to reinstall Compressor. It’s hosed.
Once you get your system working properly, running Compressor while FCP is not open will help a little. But it might not be worth it if it takes a while to export the reference clip. How long that takes depends on how many effects you have, etc.

If the cards are PCI-X, then yes, you’ll get an incredible performance boost. If the cards are not PCI-X, then you won’t.

I use an HD Plus with a Multibridge. I thought the HD Pro had component in but I guess it doesn’t.
If you need and HD card, and you need component in, and you don’t want to wait for the Multibridge to be ready, I’d get a mini-converter from AJA. Check their website. Then combine that with the regular Decklink HD.

7-year Media 100. Switched last year. Haven’t looked back.
Don’t get cheap though. Buy a Blackmagic card at least, and use whatever disk array you used with your Media 100 (we had an Atto UL3 and that works in a G5). No reason to downgrade your capability to a DV-only system. Blackmagic cards are cheaper than one of Media 100’s bug fix updates.

1-3, you get real-time for all of that. Provided the video format is DV (judging by your disks, I assume that’s what you work with), almost everything is RT with Final Cut. DV50 and DV100 will be mostly RT as well as uncompressed SD. Uncompressed HD has basic RT effects like dissolves.
4. Exporting will generally be faster than real-time playback on a dual 2.0ghz.
The Matrox RT isn’t a little outdated. It’s incredibly outdated and totally worthless for a G5.
Give the G5 a try. I garantee you’ll be blown away. That said, you have a very powerful PC there. What are you using? Premiere? I’d be willing to bet your problem is that you’re using some outdated hardware (like something from Matrox) that does all the work. This is a massive bottleneck any modern Mac or PC. Use software based rendering.
