My cousin has a Powerbook with only one Firewire port. How can he digitize using a camera and a firewire drive? Is daisy chaining the camera and drive reliable? What is the best solution?

Connect the drive to the PB, connect the camera to the drive. Should work ok as long as it’s only one drive.

Alternatively, connect the drive using the FW800 port and the camera using the FW400 port.

I don’t think it’s reliable at all. It’s already a krap shoot with FireWire drives and slow FireWire ports on cams driving down performance as it is.

I suggest buying a cardbus adapter to provide a separate bus for drives and DV Deck.

But then again, I’m rather a hardcore.

A DV stream is 25 mbps. A Firewire bus is 400 mbps. It should work rather easilly. I myself never had a problem. But what should work and what does work are two different things.

Perfectly reliable here when I do this method. Again, as long as it’s one drive and the camera going through the drive, it’s no problem at all.

Sure it’s better to separate the devices, but if you can’t it’s not a problem.

Works for me too. And that’s on an iBook.

I’m glad it works for you guys, but it really depends on your DV device. Some of the cheaper DV Camcorders are FW100 and that will drive down the speed of your drive to that level.

That’s why I’m cautious to recommend this.
