Awesome tip. I guess it does seem like a simple concept after reading it, but for someone who never even tried iChat it really sheds light on it. Until now, I all I knew is that you had to use a second Mac. Now I understand why people say that and that you really don’t need to if you can output video by means other than FW.

I understand your concerns but trust me, you don’t need them. The Decklink HD products work just as well with SD footage as the Decklink SD products do. You can set the card in System Preferences to downconvert HD footage to SD so you can still use your Sony monitor while working with HD footage. You can even pick letterbox or anamorphic. If you want to work with HDV natively, you’ll have to wait for FCP 5. For component input, get a Decklink HD Pro, or you can use a Multibridge to convert to SDI. Check the website for product info.

I have some updated info from my personal Tiger/Decklink experience. Don’t do it. It’s far less stable than I originally thought. Digitizing is fine. Laying off to tape is bad – but no worse than with Panther 10.3.8 (BMD – please fix the reference sync issues people have been complaining about for months).
It’s when you scrub around on the timeline when it gets bad. The Decklink card just poops out. The SDI monitor shuts off and the dreaded beachball shows up.
If I’m doing offline editing with DV material, I can change my Easy Setup to DV-NTSC and leave the Decklink functionality off. This seems to be pretty stable so I may have to live with it until FCP 5 comes out.

Go into system settings for Mac, control panel for Windows, and select the Decklink options. Set the option to output black video.

What are you guys talking about? I used Media 100 for seven years. Maybe I’m forgetting something. If you want the same simplicity on Final Cut – go ahead. Change your Easy Setup, highlight the clips, ctrl-click and select “batch recapture”. How is this so different or more complicated than Media 100?
If all you want is that kind of simplicity then go for it. Don’t even use Media Manager. But if you want, Media Manager is there as a very powerful tool. It has tons of uses that Media 100 can’t accomplish. Heck, you can’t even disconnect and re-link media with Media 100. Everytime I about Media 100, I realize what a joke it was and how much we wasted on them.

Yeah, but I didn’t write the script. I’m just an editor :). I actually called an Apple sales rep. She totally understood that it’s a screwed up situation but unfortunately she had no way of getting me my QT7 registration key early. So I just swallowed my pride and forked out $30.

Yeah it works but I’ve had funky wierdness. Nothing drasticly bad has happened yet but it’s too early to tell. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you upgraded to 10.3.9 and are having problems. If you’re still on 10.3.8, stay that way until FCP5 comes out.

I ran 4.8 w/ Tiger all day today. It crashed once after I saved and quit (so no biggie). Other than that, everything seemed just fine and dandy. I’ll post any problems that occur so people can decide for themselves if it’s worth the risk.
The reason I upgraded so quickly was because 10.3.9 was an absolute nightmare. It crashed over ten times yesterday.
For anyone thinking about it, stick with 10.3.8. Do not go to 10.3.9 whatever you do.

The $$$ amount is so small it’s totally trivial. But it’s the principle of the whole thing. Why should I pay for Quicktime Pro 7 when I technically already bought it by preordering Final Cut Studio?
There’s numerous ways to convert audio. I have Cleaner, Compressor, and of course Final Cut. But for doing a large group very quickly, I have an script for iTunes which will export all the selected songs to 48khz aiff using QT Pro. It saves a lot of time.
