FCP to Premiere Pro…. XML/Duck???
I am just starting to learn a little about the XML features in FCP.
My goal is to be able to switch timelines between at least Final Cut and Premiere Pro (FCP to Avid and Avid to FCP would be good too). Is there a way to utilize the XML feature within Final Cut to make this transfer or do you have to purchase a third party application like automatic duck?
How useful is the XML feature? Anyone had any experience with this?

Also what are the know NLE systems can import from XML?

Think of XML or any metadata like a spreadsheet. While other NLEs use XML, the tables and the way it’s organized are totally different from one another. One program might record audio keyframes as percentage while another uses dB values. One program could count frames while another uses SMTPE timecode. In other words, they’re not compatible.
Automatic Duck’s products are the result of the painstaking task of matching them up combined with the technical know-how to make it work. They make an importer for Premiere Pro, but no exporter. Premiere can natively export AAF files and Automatic Duck made a free AAF importer for Final Cut that is hidden on Apple’s website. But from my personal testing it’s not a reliable way to move timelines from Premiere to FCP whatsoever. It doesn’t always work and the reasons why are hard to nail down. Furthemore, AAF in this situation is pretty much cuts only – so the benfits over EDL are non-existant.
I looked into this because I have a PC at home and wanted to bring projects home. But when you think about it, the cost of PPro plus the cost of automatic duck, it’s not worth it. Plus, Premiere Pro is so similar to FCP that the little differences between the two become very annoying for some reason. It’s like driving your wife’s car. Everything’s the same until you want to turn on the wipers. Then you get really annoyed.
I’m just going to buy a MacMini instead.
