I can vouch for that as well. 5.1.2 still isn’t perfect but it’s about 90% there now.
I’ve still had some speed related issues, but most of the time it gets it right.
Now if they can just sort out the subclip, master clip, sequence relationships I will
    be happy.

Thanks for the reply. No the problem was not related to projects or did it happen straight after the upgrade to 5.1.2.
What it was in the end was CHANNEL MAPPING. Which I never even knew existed. Don’t know how it got mixed up, but if you right click on the black track buttons on the left side of the mixer you can change their output assignments. How about that? You learn something new every day with this program. (Even if you’ve been using it since beta!)

OMG that’s it!!!!! I never even new that existed. I wonder how it got mixed up? Thanks so much. Now go to bed. 😉

I use source TC in the canvas all the time. Here’s and example why. Currently editing a travel show that has a racing element to it. There are several teams. Each team has a crew. All crews at the beginning of the day lock their cameras to time-of-day code. Now when I look at a team in the timeline I can see what time of day it is and go to another team’s clip and look at that same time code to figure out what they were doing at the same time.
Extremely handy. I agree with some of the pet hate. In particular I too hate Log and Capture. I want big track buttons on the main interface that show V1 A1 A2 A3 A4 TC etc. So I never ever have to recapture something because I forgot that either the A or V was off. I want the video on the screen to be able to be switched off if I don’t want it. I too want to be able to type while capturing. I want Final Cut to tell me how long the current clip that I’m capturing is and how much longer there is to go over all.

As for media manager. The solution is simple.
1.FCP must treat sub-clips as if they are one shot sequences. This way you can match back to master clips.
    2. When recapturing sequences, sub-clips FCP must only capture the cut material with or without specified handles not ALL the media used to clips. That is just silly.
    3. All meta-data must point at: Tape and Timecode not Clip names. Clip names must only be used if Tape and TC do not exist. i.e. Graphics, Animations.
    4. When “Consolidating” FCP should be smart enough to know that you don’t need to break a clip in two
if both parts intersect when handles are added.

    My two cents. 😉

Timecode will definitely come across, as I’ve used Sebsky tools to sync rushes with matched timecode in the past.
I can’t recommend it highly enough. Works much better than bwf tools. Plus it’s free.

Did some tests today and it would seem that if everything in the playback setting is set to full and safe RT it works.
    Strange but true.

Oh and I forgot to mention. The effects we are adding result in full playback. This is why they were missed initially as when we hit “render all” Full Quality was switched off and so the sequence would render in about 3 minutes rather than 40.

Not a problem mixing down audio as it comes back to us as a stereo AIFF file from an Audio Post Facility.
Ok I will have a mess around with the settings and see if I can get it to work. I’ve never had to master DV sequences before so I’m just learning the differences here. Thanks for the advice guys. Appreciate it.

  • Generally I find nesting sequences opens up a whole world of pain in Final Cut Pro. I would avoid it at all costs.
Example. Current tv show I’m working on, I media manage my sequence down to 24 gig. 2nd editor media manages his sequence down to 50 gig! Both sequences the same length. We look closely at the sequence and find
a 1 second sound clip left over from a nest. Double click it and low and behold there is the original assembly edit sitting there. This is what Final Cut stupidly is trying to media manage. Just for one second of audio!
It’s really not so much the media manager that is at fault, it’s the way final cut can’t deal with sequences, sub-clips master clips and separate audio from video that is the problem. Lets hope FCP 6 has a complete re-write and fixes all of these problems. Especially as we begin to work in HD where consolidating media is going to become a must.

Thanks for the reply. I think your right. Getting them on the PC side to download and install the BlackMagic Drivers will probably do the trick. I didn’t realise that QuickTIme wouldn’t play Uncompressed 10 Bit without
FCP installed or Blackmagic. Workflow was capture 10Bit copy file to DVD, send to facility to transfer for Digital Cinema. (PC based.)
