  • Media Manager and Nested Sequences – Anyone had this prob?

    Hi

I realise there are many flaws in FCP’s media manager but I havent managed to find anyone else on here whose had this problem:

The ancient powermac which I cut a low budget TV show on doesn’t have enough storage so at the end of cutting each weekly episode I use media manager to conslidate the episode, copying the project and source files to a removable drive for storage.

This is where it gets tricky. Each episode is lumped together with multiple nested sequences to make the final show (anywhere from 10-20 nested seqs in each show).

When I copy the project and move the media there is always a couple of sequences which go offline. The clips are still there, its just that final cut doesn’t reconnect from the master to the copied media.

Anyone got any hints for me??

oh yeah and another factor here is that the show is always cut from Capture Now clips which can be up to an hour long. I don’t usually make subclips out of these as it seems like it would be asking for more trouble!

Using FCP 5.0.4 on a dual 1ghz powermac (urrrgh) with 10.3.9 and a rediculous firewire hub with about 4 drives comming off it. I hate this setup!

    thanks in advance

Generally I find nesting sequences opens up a whole world of pain in Final Cut Pro. I would avoid it at all costs.
Example. Current tv show I’m working on, I media manage my sequence down to 24 gig. 2nd editor media manages his sequence down to 50 gig! Both sequences the same length. We look closely at the sequence and find
a 1 second sound clip left over from a nest. Double click it and low and behold there is the original assembly edit sitting there. This is what Final Cut stupidly is trying to media manage. Just for one second of audio!
It’s really not so much the media manager that is at fault, it’s the way final cut can’t deal with sequences, sub-clips master clips and separate audio from video that is the problem. Lets hope FCP 6 has a complete re-write and fixes all of these problems. Especially as we begin to work in HD where consolidating media is going to become a must.
