I really hope FCP 7 is put out to pasture by Yosemite. It’s time for it to go away. It’s nearly 5 years without a significant update! I just can’t handle the rigours of modern media anymore.
Don’t care what people choose, just want to work on good stable systems that a built for today’s world.

Well I do a lot of work in reality TV.and occasionally use multicolor sequences, but I’m not a huge fan of them as you spend too much time juggling tracks.
I was asked to do a pilot for a new reality show which featured 3 cameras and 10 microphones all in sync.
When I heard this I asked if it could be cut in FCP X as it would be much much faster. And it was. I got the job done in about half the time it would have taken me in FCP 7.The power comes from the way FCP X handles Camera Angles. It means that it will put all of one camera angle on one track in the multiclip. Something neither FCP 7 or Avid can do.
The powerful feature is the way you can expand any clip and isolate its audio by using clip skimming.
So the sound recordist who was using an 8 track recorder also used one of the cameras to capture the other two mics. In multicast it’s super easy to designate which audio tracks are monitored. You can also name each track just for the multiclip. So I named each track with the person’s name. Made everything super simple!Oh and by the way there was NO JAM sync. Cameramen FORGOT. FCP X did all the sync just using its own methods.
The client was super impressed.

Interesting discussion. Would be nice if you could change dates easily but it isn’t so.
It your issue is that you want a little calendar that says 1980 over your events then maybe just create on file that is set to the 80s and use it as a way of forcing the event to show that date.
Or forget about the little calendar icons and just create one keyword called “1980s” and then apply it to all the clips in one hit.
Would take about 10 seconds. Then finding stuff would be really easy.R E D N A I L – M E D I A

Yeah today after issues. I got it to work but it isn’t pretty. Open Voice Over, Select your mic then quick as hell click in timeline. All is fine.
Make sure you switch back to whatever you had before when you close the tool otherwise next time you open it CRASH!The other problem I’ve been having with Lion is iChat, I wonder if these problems could be related?
Anyway I’m happy with SimplyRec for now.I’ve posted this problem on the Apple forums as well to see if anyone else is having similar issues

One thing I did do was go to the Mac App Store and buy a little program called “SimplyRec” as looking at Audacity I kept thinking I’d been transported back in time by 10 years. Awful.

Installed Lion the day it came out. Had no issues. Have also installed FCP X recently and have recorded voice overs in it just fine. Even today.
Yes they are on the same partition. Tried re-installing FCP and then added QT 7 as Lion deleted it. Still no good.I have no idea what I did differently. Last night when I used it it crashed too but on relaunch all was fine. Today I can’t select anything other than default in the Tool without it hanging. Have ditched prefs etc. At a loss to figure it out, but I’ve wasted too much time on it already I need to get back to cutting.

Also having the exact same issue. Funny because last night I recorded some voice overs with my Blue Snowball directly into the Timeline but today there is nothing I can do to stop FCP 7.03 from crashing. Even if I select a different source to the default (iSight) it crashes.
Let’s hope there is an update to Lion that fixes this behaviour.

For me the interface has hardly changed since I began using it in 1992. Then Final Cut came out in 1999 and basically cherry picked everything that was good with Avid and left the rest.
Here’s what I’d love to see Avid steal from FCP.
A proper customisable keyboard.
The ability to see waveforms for audio only files loaded into the source monitor.
A total re-write of effects mode. It truly sucks the way it is right now.
Give us proper Vectorscope and Waveform monitors, not this one line rubbish.
Re-work the preferences so that it’s not all over the place like it is now.
Allow US to designate sequence settings not the first clip.
A tool palette containing things like Crop, Trim Rollers, Pen tool, Speed etc.
Ditch or make “Filler” optional. I hate the way it is an object in the Timeline.
Make the interface look modern!
These are just a few but would go a long way to helping feel like I would actually like to cut on Avid again.
Right now I’m on MC 3, and I feel like I’ve gone through a timewarp back to 1995.

Really? You think Apple will buy Avid?
That would be interesting. Though I doubt there is much Apple would gain from it.
Maybe Adobe? That would make more sense to me.Anyway kudos to see Avid FINALLY taking on FCP and stealing some of their ideas for a change.
Really the whole interface needs an overhall, but all these features look good.Hope there is a totally customisable keyboard in there too.

FWIW just finished a job that was shot with 3 Canon 5D Mk IIs all green screen.
Best keys we’ve ever pulled. I am not joking. We had talent behind plexiglass smoking a pipe that we were able to key through. Simply amazing. It’s not just the codec it’s the lens and the sensor as well. A big sensor means little noise. Great glass means clean images.
The chroma keys were performed in Final Cut Studio and Adobe After Effect with Primatte Keyer 4.0.
