  • Change Clips Date in Event?

Posted by Doug Eli on August 5, 2011 at 12:59 am

I am importing some old footage shot in the 80’s and 90’s. We captured these off the original tapes and want to get them in FCPX. The issue I have is that the date is the date when the digital file was created. Is there any way to alter this date? I suppose I can use some tool that lets you get in deep on the file and edit some binary stuff or some such techno babbly stuff, but first I’d like to know if there is an easier way.

Do you want to rename the actual file on disk, or just in FCP?

both would be good but having the event date show the date it was shot is most important.

There’s a couple of options, but you should test a recapture to make sure it works.

    1) Simply rename the files in the finder, then drag these files back in to your event. (do this on one file and try a recapture on this newly renamed file)

    2) Rename the files in the browser by hitting enter and type in the name, which keeps the finder clips with the current date name.

    3) Use the “info” tab to custom rename the clips. Heres a screen grab if you want a look, also keeps finder names the same:

    4) Use keywords to organize the shots by decade, month, whatever. 🙂

I used terminal. Works but is one at a time.

    Btw…was changing date not name.

I’m sorry, I misunderstood. You want to modify the actual date to the 80s???

    Just curious as to why?

The organization i work fnor started in 1976 and produced a lot of promo videos and teaching videos. The founded passed away in the last year and it was sort of a big deal as he was highly regarded by his peers. So we want to offer some of his old teaching videos to people as well ad use bits from the early prOmos in our new materials to show how it all began.

I wonder if something like ResEdit can change all that?

Sorry to hear about your founder.

You do know you can turn off the “sort by date” function, right?

I would turn that off, and then give the clips a more meaningful name in the browser.

That way, you might be able to recapture if something goes wrong. I really don’t think modifying the creation date in the Terminal is worth it.

I like accurate dates. Helps Keep all the file and event info meaningful. While I dOnt use sort by date much I do want it tO be accurate when I do.

Yeah, suit yourself I guess. To me it seems like a whole bunch if work for nothing. You can name date clips by date and sort by name. Not to mention, if you ever need to recapture, you would have to do this process all over again. I think there might be “better” ways to think about this.

I truly think you should check out the metadata section of FCPX.

You are missing out on one of FCPx’s true strengths!
