  • [Oliver Peters] ” Auditions are great for editors who can’t make a decision.”

I see it as for editors who make the best decisions…. 😉

  • [Oliver Peters] “Except that is breaks down when you need to make and retain direct comparisons.”

So, Auditions does not work for you here? If I were doing that, I would load the hero takes into an audition and play them back that way. Even in Avid and Legacy I would use subclips and bins for my material. Note, back in those “legacy days” I was doing mainly 30 second film spots so the footage was not overwhelming.

  • Here is how I just did a 2 minute promo piece for a client in New Orleans this past week:

Import (leave in place) footage into FCP. Events for different locations and items (end cards, music, etc)

Filter via favorites in each event. Entire clips or just parts of clips.

Create version 1 project timeline by appending the sh** out of footage (E key). Rough, but I get an idea.

Trim to taste. Put multiple clips of music on and having one active at a time for review.

Snapshot version 2 and trim more, move clips around to create a better flow.

Snapshot version 3 with client feedback. Share to web for approval.

    Bill job to client.

Am I a bricklayer or sculpture? Not that it matters because the client was happy and I got paid sooner.

[Oliver Peters] “There’s a Fortune magazine article (6/15 issue) coming out about Adobe. Apparently subscription numbers, income, and stock prices are all up”

Too bad that hasn’t worked for Avid.

It’s an interesting company and theory. To spread out the revenue (so as not to depend on just editing software) other companies lean on hardware, cameras, storage, etc. Adobe just makes more software and has figured a price that makes it all work. Plus they are going hard at enterprise and educational accounts (like VCU, where I teach). The challenge they have at an educational (and I assume corporate/enterprise level is showing a value for all parts of the university. Why should the business school consider the CC over the MC (marketing cloud)? Why would the folks in the Nursing School care about the CC? What happens to student work after they leave their educational account upon graduation? Can I get Adobe Stock as a standalone contract for my school (Dennis, can you help here?)? I was at yet another Adobe presentation 4 weeks ago and they had no good answers for these questions. rather some vague “we’ll certainly have to look into that…” type of replies. If I am Apple, I sense an opportunity here…if they really care.

Just used this link/lesson for music. Worked like a charm.

    Hey Gary –

I still had Soundtrack Pro on my system, so after a bit of finageling, I was able to create the folder for X10.3.4 as described in the video. Thanks very much for your help!

Maybe I was not clear. IN FCP10.2 and backwards there was a bunch of stock music included. Most of which came from Soundtrack Pro. Are these tunes no longer available? They weren’t great but certainly were ok for scratch music tracks.

[andy patterson] “$49.99 for the CC in another two years may seem expensive depending on where the competition is at.”

Or when more people who use the “Adobe Big Five” realize they are paying for the development of software they will never use (the rest of the CC).

[andy patterson] “If I charge$1000.00 to build a website and my potential client find someone to do it for less I loose the business. “

But wait, FCPX costs less than CC in the long run. So is Adobe losing business to Apple in this model? Pure cost?

[andy patterson] “I do hope we see Adobe change it’s paradigm but it will not be because of anything I said or you said but because of the competition.”

For me, and probably many others, I use Pr (when forced to), PS, AE and some Illustrator. That’s it. I don’t need, nor want, the bloated CC package of, what, 15-20 some-odd softwares. So really I should be paying about $10 – $15/month for the five I want (maybe that is where you got your $14.99 number). If I need more, I pay more a la carte. But at $49/month I am being forced to pay for the development of software I will never use. At least in Avid-land, one can assume the monthly fee is going to something close to the core editing software.
