I personally like the RevisionFX FieldsKit plugin. If there are some better deinterlacers, I would be interested in learning more.
I haven’t used it with HD footage, but I’ve used it to make 60p masters that I then take down to 24p on SD footage.
Nattress may also have a solution.

It sounds like the movie you received *was* interlaced, and may have been scaled without being first deinterlaced, before you received it.

Grass Valley in a way doesn’t exist anymore. The name is owned by Thomson and they now brand what were Philips Diamond Digital production switchers with the Grass Valley name. Those switchers replaced what was a fairly new line of switchers called Zodiak. They is still selling their Kalypso line, but it’s been around since 1999, and word of new switcher developemnt has not been positive so far. Any newly developed products are probably coming from Germany, not Grass Valey.
I still contend that the rumor was started by a competitor. Of all the potential suitors for ProApps, which one would elicit the most negative reaction from future FCP customers?
Of all of Apple’s competitors, which one would gain the most from a cloud hanging over FCP? The chief engineer at my station calls that company “Livid”, and for good reason.

Select the footage in the bin and press
I to get info on the TIFF sequence. In the column where it indicates field dominance, there is a little, hidden pop-up menu there. You should be able to force it to upper or lower, similar to the footage settings in After Effects. TIFF sequences can have fields just like anything else.

Avid sent us a letter stating that they are dropping the MediaStream line of servers. We bought our two when it was still a Pinnacle product, but they arrived after the Avid purchase; therefore they aren’t that old yet. (nice Avid logos on the front though!)
So, after this announcement, after dealing with Avid on features that still aren’t working correctly, after spending so much money with them on an EOL product, do you seriously think we will be looking at anything from Avid in the future?
A family member of mine in the business ran into a former boss at NAB a couple of years ago. The boss is a manager of a production studio that is owned by and services several cable networks. He was asked what he was looking for at the show. The reply: “Anything but Avid”.
I understand how he feels now.

I’ve always liked this editor story. In the session, the client asks which monitor has the correct color? The editor responds, “Which one do you prefer?”. The client points to one and the editor tells them “That’s the one we’re using”. Makes the client happy anyway. 🙂

Keep in mind that PAL was developed with color from the start. There was no need to be backwards compatible with existing televisions. Also, PAL was actually developed *from* NTSC and are very similar. Had the NTSC standard been given a clean sheet of paper in the early 1960’s, our standard would probably have been given the advancements that PAL has enjoyed.

I haven’t yet made plans for this year’s NAB; but if I don’t go, I’ll miss my Ille espresso at the Sell and Wilcox booth. 🙁
I actually spent most of my time last year in booths other than Apple. I was looking mainly at production switchers. I also spent time looking at plugins. I’ve met up with family friends who are microphone manufactures, and I’ve also talked to people who I consider to pioneers in digital imaging and effects. Part of me wants to see them again and chat with them more.
NAB can be many things to many people, but things aren’t looking good right now. I saw a similar thing happen to Promax/BDA. The show kept getting smaller and smaller; and that started eight or ten years ago. The decline in the Promax show was more about bad management. Perhaps NAB is going through the same thing. I both hate and love trade shows, and I suspect that someday they will make a comeback.
