Yes, the FW bus on the camera is just an output and not an input. I think that is weird to do on Panasonic’s part… seems simple enough that you could input into the cam thru FW… but who knows.
Likely a missing feature that keeps you buying more Panny cameras down the road!

Can’t you just playback the tape in the SDX? I believe that your tape will play correctly only if the camera is set to the mode that your recording is in.
I have an HDX, and I remember playing back a tape shot in 30p that did not playback correctly in the camera, until I reset the camera to the same 30p.
Or, dump your footage into your nle and look at the metadata.

HDX900 is firewire out… it does not take a signal in via firewire. If you are trying to playback clips from your FS into the HDX to view… it won’t work.

SD SDI is quite possible out of the camera… it is controlled by a switch near the audio settings, for the video out BNC.
Audio is embedded in the data stream. Timecode is not embedded in the data stream, so be aware of that gotcha.
I use SD SDI out of my HDX900 when recording SD files into a NanoFlash recorder. It works well, save for the lack of timecode out of the SD SDI stream.
Cheers.

I’ve got Kata rain covers. One has a velcro opening at the top, above the camera’s handle, which will allow you to get a monitor attached. They also have a few larger sized models, one is: Kata RC-OB for about $300.

I’ve used the same ones, bought a few to test like Ernie did in 2006. They still work great. I have 6 now. I had two of the twin chargers, but one died. I sent to B4B and he gave me a discount on a new charger. Now I have the 4 position. It was good customer service.
I am very happy with the batteries. They also have a handy 12v port AB-type plugs and a regular round 12v dc port. That has come in handy for a quickie light setup with an AB toplight.
One larger 140 will run the HDX900 for several hours. I usually only need 1.5 batts to get through a long day of shooting.

The lens is a Nikon 9×5.5.
Another issue seems to be that the zoom calculation in the viewfinder is off… never experienced that before but it reads only between 90 and 53 rather than 0-100%. Anyone know what can cause this and how to remedy it?

May 4, 2008 at 8:25 am in reply to: filming a car chase scene like the one from BullittRegardless of your ability to finance it…. watch Bullit and you will see a few funny things. One, they re-use some shots. Two, they cheated a few shots. Three, one second they are in SF and the next shot they are up on San Bruno mountain. Still, it was a great f-in chase. McQueen kicked butt.
But, Ronin was a better chase scene.
