Isn’t this a similar situation to the Canon 5D MII, 7D, or am I missing something?
So if you ‘unwrap’ these files, what do you end up with?

Hmm, too bad you already reused the media, it would have been better for the editor to capture the media himself since Mpeg4 (aka H.264) is really not an editing codec, and will need to be converted. ProRes would be the way to go.

Hi,
Without seeing whats going on in person, this is just a guess.Could the footage be HDV1 from a JVC or a Panasonic camera? Since Sony is HDV2, this might be why you can’t transfer from your deck.
I’ve got a JVC deck and have run into similar problem with Sony footage in it.
If this is whats going on, changing your FCP capture settings won’t help, you will need either the right deck or camera.Scott Sheriff

Hi,
I think you have to consider what these lenses cost. ‘Back in the day’ before these inexpensive HD cameras were even thought of, a good mid-range zoom for a Betacam would run you 10-20k. And those were for 4:3 ratio, which is a lot easier to do. Yeah, it would be great to have less barrel distortion, CA, bigger aperture, etc. But for the money, these lenses are ok.
Really to have an HD lens included with the camera, and the whole thing cost less than what we used to spend on a set of sticks.I haven’t seen the Canon and the Fujinon side by side, but I have seen some posts (elsewhere) that folks liked the Canon. Even so, at the price point, my guess is there is always some trade-off in performance to be considered. Just like CCD vs CMOS, it just a question of which flaws in the system you find least annoying. I think when you consider the size of the camera sensor, format, colorspace, vs the cost and performance of better lenses, it might be easy to get into an area of diminishing returns.
I’m not sure what you shoot, but the majority of the audience are not editors, or DP’s, and unless your stuff is heading for the big screen, I doubt the viewer will see these flaws. All gear has strong and weak points, I would just set up my shots to minimize the weakness of the gear. If your story is good, the audience probably won’t notice.

Well, that is simply not the case. A laptop is not the only solution, in the field. It’s your solution in the field.
I have worked on plenty of remotes that had full editing suites, both linear and NLE in the truck. Sure I’ve seen laptops on news shoots where there was a MBP in the ENG truck. It was there to cut simple packages in the field, and yes people bring them to do rough cuts on the set. But I also know people that have full desktop systems in Pelican cases and they set them up on the road.So, if you had a choice of two edit bays. One with a MBP and a pair of headphones. And the other had a full blown desktop system with two large monitors, near field audio monitors, RAID, etc. Would you really choose the laptop bay over the desktop? To me there is a difference between ‘do-able’ and preferable.
Ok, your in the field, and your traveling so light that all you can bring is a laptop, and there is no AC power. Sure it happens, but how many FCP users find themselves in this situation on a regular basis? And then we can throw in guys that have a desktop, but also use a MBP on location, and then add those that are on such a tight budget, the laptop is all they can afford. Add them all up, and that sounds like the minority in both the FCP users, and in the MBP users. This is probably why Apple isn’t catering to this group. The marketing guys figured it didn’t represent the majority of MBP buyers, or what they are using them for.

That is most likely the problem.
I know Apple says you can upgrade, but in the real world it just ain’t so.
Treat both the OS, and FCP as a fresh install. As long as you have a valid ser# for FCP your good. The whole thing is on the upgrade discs.
I would suggest you do a search in this forum using ‘clean install’, and do a bit of reading first. It will save you a lot of headaches.

Except for a few limited circumstances, a laptop is a poor choice for an editing workstation. So it only makes sense that Apple doesn’t optimize them for that use.

Did you do a clean install of the OS and FCP, or just upgrade?
Do a search on this forum under ‘clean install’.
