MP4 from PC to final cut
Hallo
I shot a concert for a client last Saturday.
I used 3 EX1’s for the job.The client wanted to edit the footage himself.
I use Vegas Pro
He uses Final Cut proHe asked to get a HD with all the footage so I imported all the footage using Vegas and put it all on a HD.
He now has the hard drive and has transferred all the footage to his Mac.
But he can’t use it, as Final cut refuses to open or play the clips.
I have no knowledge about Final Cut so I thought I would ask the nice folks here at creative cow for some assistance !
What do I do ?
How does my client get my MP4 files ?…the SxS has already been used for something else

Did you back up the contents of the SxS cards, by which I mean the original BPAV folders? This is the preferred way to archive SxS cards in case you need to edit their contents in another NLE in the future. If you have the BPAV folders, give them to your client.
FCP imports XDCAM footage differently than Vegas. FCP uses a utility called Log and Transfer to open the BPAV folders and rewrap the contents into Quicktime files. If you didn’t save the BPAV folders, then others on this forum may have suggestions how to deliver usable files to your client.

Hmm, too bad you already reused the media, it would have been better for the editor to capture the media himself since Mpeg4 (aka H.264) is really not an editing codec, and will need to be converted. ProRes would be the way to go.

MP4 is a container. H264 is a codec.
The EX records MP4. In fact there are MPEG-2 wrapped as MP4.
For FC you need to un-wrap them or use a plugin.

So you didn’t back up the cards, keeping the complete file structure? DO you also capture tapes and then throw them away, or reuse them? In the tapeless world you MUST keep that file structure.
You captured the footage into Vegas, and now are trying to get that captured footage into FCP? Footage that is captured in one editing software typically cannot be used in another. So if you knew that they were going to be using FCP, you need to take measures to ensure that they can access the footage.
You need to convert the MP4 files to a QT format that the mac can read, and then they can convert them to a format FCP understands. Bear in mind that timecode and other metadata wont be accurate using this method.

Isn’t this a similar situation to the Canon 5D MII, 7D, or am I missing something?
So if you ‘unwrap’ these files, what do you end up with?

Is different than with the Canon files.
In the Canon you get plain H264 QT movies.
With the EX you get MP4 files that will be re-wrapped as QT or as MFX (Mac or PC) during the transfer. The codec is the SONY EX (MPEG-2).
So if you don’t know if the stuff will be edited in a PC or a Mac, the best option is to save the full BPAV folder keeping the structure.
I think that Vegas and other PC applications can work directly with these MP4, but QT can not read them.
It would be great if this would be fixed.

Yes I figured that I needed to convert them.
Do you know of a good application that can convert to ProRes ?“Footage that is captured in one editing software typically cannot be used in another.”
For some year I worked with a guy who used Premiere Pro while I used Vegas , we never had trouble using files in Premiere that Vegas captured or imported (or vice versa).

That seem completely unnecessary for me,
when I can edit the Mp4’s directly with Vegas.
But I can see why FCP uses need to do that.Glad I’m using Vegas 😉
