good description Kevin. I think the jury is still out on the i7 processors. 64 bit is really going to help as far as HD goes, but Ram becomes the holy grail. Computers will get much more expensive if memory prices dont dip some in the next few years. On paper, the new 27″ imac 4 core i7 *8 virtual cores) for roughly $2100 Is as good a deal as you will ever find all things considered. All the power of an 8 core tower (like I have now) for half the price…. Still need to max the ram out at 16 though. (there will be better machines, but much more costly)

seems to me that they used a ‘digital juice’ type lighting effect and then used the luminance to reveal the image below…

October 24, 2009 at 9:05 am in reply to: AE CS4 Reloading Assets Shifts/Moves Objects in Compsnot enough detail. Once you import someone elses file you need to play it, or view it for accuracy.
If you do not have the same versions of illustrator, im not aware that that would matter. If there is an issue, RE import the file, save it in EI. Go to the assets and hit command E, to edit them. FInd out if there
anchor points are messed up or re-set a new file. Ive never had a problem this way (15yrs in ae and ai)SuperNova

boy its hard to tell with your sample looking so nice. When your outputing 1080i from a DV souurce which starts at 1440, you are already at a disadvantage. Conversion is needed. When you are in an app like AE or even FC. The still frame you are viewing depends so much on your monitors calibration and a variety of other settings. I HATE to sound old school on you, but color correction and consistency among output sources is an area that a LOT of the last 5-10 yrs of graduates have yet to respect and make adjustments for. The hardware has gotten so amazining, that the sheer issue of color tends to make its way out of importance. “If were close were good” is usually the mantra. I will tell you what tons of pros will also tell you. Get USED to YOUR SYSTEM and its OUTPUT. And make color correction and decisions based on THAT. We ALL have are unique workflows. The key is finding consistency WITHIN OUR OWN
workflow and our OUTPUT. Its an in exact science. But its what most of us do, in my opinion.Scott….

very clever Kim. I have to recommend doing it is a true 3d app. Its so much simpler and more versatile.
but that does not help you here I guess. A project like this would motivate me to learn the basics of one of the big 3d’s. I am ALWAYS weighing effort, quality, versatility of a given look doing it in 3d VS AE and or a combination. As a generalist, thats where I believe a mographers strength lies. The ‘melding’ of various apps based on the best looking and smartest work flow. (ok im off my soapbox)good luck, ive seen billboard with that look…

I would agree with peter. Individual layers would allow you to also indivdually ‘cheat’ certain parts like the ears and more with a little xyz tilting…

im sure there is some script for this, but I would line up the images in photoshop and map them on an elongated rectangle and then deform that into a circle. In C4d or EI, or Maya. Im heavy into 3d and prefer its versatility to AE’s. There may be a plug in that aligns and distributes images, digital anarchy had one a while back…

as one of the leaders here on the AE forum AND the Zazwerks Forum AND the motion graphics forum, I HAVE to give my opinion here. Zaxwerks is an EXCELLENT tool for taking illustrator artwork into a hi – end 3d app. That is the “hardest” part of the whole process. Once you have the model properly set and divided between the face bevels and edges or more, than its simply a matter of using the shading setup in the app you choose. I use Maya, C4d AND (still) Electric Image. Check out my reel, one of the more well recieved reels here on creative cow
I have used invigerator for almost ALL of my modeling and Electric Image for my rendering and im here in Hollywood. EI is easily the best and easiest to use mograph app for the money out there today. C4d is VERY strong in many areas, but I find its rendering to be a bit difficult. c4d is what you need to work for someone these days, but, if your just looking for kick ass imagery easy and affordable. EI tech group and EIAS with 18 yrs in feature film work to its credit, is the way id go. (I still use them all for certain things)

October 18, 2009 at 5:35 am in reply to: Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro VS Boris FX Units 3D ObjectsAs a rarely used zax expert, I can easily plug Zax’s solutions as the BEST by far of ANY 3d solution in after effects. The versatility alone makes it the best solution. As you advance in 3d, ONLY ONE PRODUCT is ready for you. AND thats ZAXWERKS. Its models make the jump to high end 3d seamless. That is so important. Zax outputs to ALL major 3d, even my electric Image. Lightwave, max, maya, c4d…..
My career and output would be nothing without Zax’s products.

I respect Simon greatly. Frankly, its a photoshop roto thing to me. After all, the best of the best in our field are good painters and retouchers. Use your good eye and paint out the pixels….
computers dont make things EASY. But, as an artist, be thankful that they make some things OBVIOUS.
good luck.
