I agree with you, and luckly I rarely have to deal with consumer/prosumer footage where i work.
That’s why i posted my original question. And i was considering the
flip camera cause i want something nice and cheap that my wife can use without issue. But i also don’t want a hassle if i want to cut a clip down to send to the grandparents or something.I’m hoping i can take the files and just import them or use AMA and get’em into the avid quickly without having to transcode or jump through any other hoops. My educacted guess would is that it shouldn’t be a problem, BUT when dealing with files you never know.

thanks for the responce. I was looking more for someone who has used them, and has some “watch out for this or that”
AMA is not always “if you can play them your good” I love Avid, but AMA still needs work.

You also need to consider if you want to work with the client again.
If i hired you than was told no if i asked for the source footage that i paid you to shoot. I would simply never hire you again. No matter what the contract stated. Simple fact of life, there are 20 people in line looking for the work, and only 5 of them will complain
about handing of the tapes.As and editor I’ve compied entire projects (project file and media) because a job had switched producers and they wanted to work somewhere else. Saying no just won’t keep the work, it’ll just make sure they never come back with anything else.

I would try doing your video mixdown in smaller chunks, like 15 mins chunks. see if that gets you better performance.

More than likely it’s your drive speed thats the problem. what resolution are you working at and on what type of drives?

I’ve had the same issue for along time now. Got a weekly formatting client and some of the shows are 23.98. In the begining We couldn’t figure out how to get it loaded with timecode so the assitant just loads the da-88/98 without timecode and I end up syncing it back up in the Avid.

It’s a tim burton movie of course it’s not that good.
sure it’s “Strange for the sake of being strange”
but most of his movies are so-so at best.just my 2 cents.
