  • Capturing a DA-98 Tape to a 23.976 Project

    Hey Folks.
I’ve done this in the past, but seem to be missing something this time.
I’m trying to load a DA-98 into a 23.967 project. In the past I’ve just set the TC on the DA-98 to 29.97NDF and it works great. But now, after a few seconds I’m getting discontinuity TC errors.
My deck profile in the capture tool is set to the preset “Tascam DA-88 24P” because it wont let me choose anything but a 24P profile (makes sense).
When I shuttle through on the capture tool, I watch the frames count to 24, then 1,2,3,4,5, and then 1,2,3,4,5,6,7…24 etc.

    Other details:
-Avid Symphony Nitris DX 3.5 on a turnkey xw8600 PC
-Reference: No ref to the deck, internal set in avid
    -Capturing 8Channels through AES/EBU
-This is not a film-originated project. It’s a program shot 1080p 23.976 and the da88 taoe contains audio stems from a pro tools system.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

I’m pretty sure that in a 23.98p HD project, the Avid expects 24TC. But, if you go to the project window and switch the project type to 23.976p NTSC, you should be able to capture with 29.97TC. Then you can flip the project back to HD. Worth a try, I guess.

Thanks, I’ll give it a try when I’m done loading some other tapes. But I know for a fact that I’ve done this before on a similar project just a few weeks ago.
The most annoying part is that you can’t tell what frame rate the DA-88 was recorded at. Whatever you set the deck (30, 24, etc) is how it counts.

I’ve had the same issue for along time now. Got a weekly formatting client and some of the shows are 23.98. In the begining We couldn’t figure out how to get it loaded with timecode so the assitant just loads the da-88/98 without timecode and I end up syncing it back up in the Avid.

The client tells me the tapes were recorded at 29.27 Drop Frame.

[Scott Cumbo] “so the assitant just loads the da-88/98 without timecode and I end up syncing it back up in the Avid. “

Is that the best way to avoid the drift?

And in the end, thats all that matters.
I’ve setup the DA-98 with house composite black as a reference source and I’m capturing wild. I’ll give an update when it’s all finished.
    Thanks!

As far as I remember, on a DA-98, there’s a TC menu where you have System TC and Tape TC. System is how your deck is set, and Tape TC is what’s actually on tape.

The final solution was to lock the da-88 to video reference and digitize without timecode.

    Thanks for all the help!
