If 10lbs is ok the Toshiba P25-s520 is a good choice.
Any Hyper Threading P4, 3ghz or higher with a 800mhz bus should work great.
Make sure that the video processor has it’s own memory and does not use “Shared System Memory”.
Also, several USB2 ports are a must. Firewire is good, but if you want to preview the results on a regular tv it will be plugged into the camera.
Other than that, pick the one that stands out to you.

Make sure that you have the 2 latest updates from Adobe – Main Concept Media encoder and premiere 1.5.1.

I make DVD’s from the timeline all the time and have no problems. Since you are commenting about the low quality video it would be prudent to think that a different preset needs to be used. Try one of the high quality exporting settings and see if it gives any different results. I have never had anything but pristine encodes fom premiere. Lower quality encodes will take longer than high ones (i know that sounds wierd, but try it, it does check out). Also make sure that it is a DVD preset and not a VCD preset.

Just out of curiosity, what failures have you had with recording in LP mode? In 4 years I have never had a failure and am curious what has happened to other people.

From The Specifications Sheet “Picture Elements : 960 horizontal x 234 vertical dots”. That resolution seems like it would be quite pixilated at that size (correct me if i’m wrong). Also, it says nothing about being a TFT display. I would expect the murky, washed out picture from a passive matrix screen.

Just for reference, I have a HT p4 3ghz machine and my encoding time is about 1.5 to 1 (1.5 hours for a 1 hour program). The only thing I can think of slowing you down is using a project preset different than your footage. (IE. 24pa preset for non 24pa footage). When you drop footage in the timeline does a red bar show up at the top of the timeline?

What encoding preset are you using in premiere?
Also, MiniDV is compressed at a 5:1 ratio – DVD is about 24:1 (or so). Even with the compression the DVD should look great. Make sure you are doing a 2 pass VBR encodong with at least 3 or 4 Mbps. This should give you more than satisfactory results.
