good pc laptop for editing
Posted by Ruby Gold on July 20, 2005 at 8:46 pmI bought an Acer Aspire 1710 laptop (desktop replacement) so that I could do video editing/effects while away from home. The darn thing is so heavy (16 lbs!) that I end up never taking it anywhere to work on and am wondering if folks have a laptop/spec recommendations for a lighter weight laptop that can handle the space, processing, sound/video card demands of PPro 1.5 and AE 6.5. Thanks a lot!

July 20, 2005 at 11:58 pmIf 10lbs is ok the Toshiba P25-s520 is a good choice.
Any Hyper Threading P4, 3ghz or higher with a 800mhz bus should work great.
Make sure that the video processor has it’s own memory and does not use “Shared System Memory”.
Also, several USB2 ports are a must. Firewire is good, but if you want to preview the results on a regular tv it will be plugged into the camera.
Other than that, pick the one that stands out to you.

July 21, 2005 at 3:57 amI use the Dell Inspiron 9300 (a Pentium M system) I had the same issues with my P4 laptop, ie: overheating, excessive noise and poor battery life. I switched to the Pentium M machine in March or so and couldnt be happier. Although, weighing in at about 7lbs, the system is extremely quite, very cool and the battery life is about 5 hours or so.
My specs:
Pentium M 2.0ghz (533 mhz FSB)
1GB DDR2 RAM
ATI x300 Graphics card
CD-RW/DVD ROM
17 inch WUXGA screen (Widescreen [16:10] 1920*1200 resolution)Aanarav Sareen

July 21, 2005 at 4:49 pmThanks a lot for this feedback. And these machines can handle running PPro 1.5 AND AE 6.5 and working? Also–any recommendations on other spec recommendations for the computer like HD size, sound cards, specific vid card, etc? Thanks-

July 21, 2005 at 5:02 pmHi Ruby,
Yes, my laptop is running the entire video suite professional including AE 6.5, PPRO 1.5, Encore DVD 1.5, Photoshop CS and Audition 1.5 with no problems at all.I wrote this article a couple of days back and might help you with some of the topics that you mentioned above. It is by no means complete, but I will certainly be updating it when I get back from vacation:

July 22, 2005 at 8:24 pmHi Scott. I’m wondering what you recommend in terms of the HD RPM? Also, how much memory for the vid card?
thanks-
Ruby
