  • You need to change the “Use project settings” to get into the options

March 27, 2013 at 7:54 am in reply to: Arri Raw

Arri RAW files have absolutely no benefit in terms of color density over the ProRes4444 Log C files.
They are just 10 times as heavy.
If they used the full 3K files, at least you can get better and sharper results.
But forget the whole RED like workflow with 15 settings and meta data…there is zero 🙂

you are working from a database apparently.
    Do you need that ?
If not switch to a disk based one.
This happens when you have a crash and the project is not properly released.
Just save it under a new name and forget about the ghost.

March 25, 2013 at 5:13 pm in reply to: Faster 5k Renders

Is it RED ? You need a Rocket.
Is it 5K ? You need two
Is it encoding ? You need faster CPUs
Is it nodes ? You need GPU

Is it a combination of them ? you need money 🙂
Ask your client for it…if they dont have it, its a hobby.

Using it since the day it came out…
    Its great..
the improved spline algorithm alone is worth it.
generally all updates are a good step forward.

March 21, 2013 at 7:41 am in reply to: nice skin tone….

The problem is that people are spoiled by beauty fotography and Michael Bay.
Sometimes I make a little fun with the producers and ask them if they want natural skintones or digital makeup.
The later is keying the whole range, desaturating it by 50% or more and moving the midtones towards an orangy shade that fits the surroundings.
And of course they chose the “natural” skin tones which is the heavily tempered one.
All those shades of green in the beard area , the purple blotches you encounter when grading men above 45 and the pinkyness of babies…not really appreciated.
A nice californian tan is what people normally like too see, even here in foggy Denmark

  • I think this totally depends what you are doing.
I was grading 11 episodes of a TV series this month, the machine was running for like three weeks, I am running Smoke in the BG to convert stuff and i had not a single crash in Resolve.
Today a guy brought a little USB drive with Red clips on and it crashed twice just during playback.
But I make it a good habit sending crash logs back to BMD and they always respond, even help personally if a project is stuck.

  • I think we all should get some cookies and chill a little..

I mean, everyone who used Primatte , Ultimatte or just the Modular Keyer in Smoke know that there is a lot of truth in this.
The key is rudimental at best…
But I actually never missed an overly precise keyer…for classic colorist purposes its totally fine…also because surfaces close to each other bounce light an color.
First priority is a bigger blur.
And playing with Sapphires in Smoke tough me there is a lot more that can be done in realtime today, even with a single Q4000.
There are a lot of things that could be better in Resolve today, yes…but
The control surface is not one of them .
