    Hello all,

I’ve recently started working with a graphics house that requires 5k renders for their jobs. Even with my system which is equipped with a Red Rocket, the renders are painfully slow. I am considering purchasing a Cubix GPU Expander to speed things up. My question is what card(s) would help aid render speeds? I really don’t want to buy a second Red Rocket, could I get away with a few Quadro cards in there, like the 6000?

    My setup right now has:

    1x Red Rocket
    1x Quadro 4000
    1x ATI Radeon HD 5770
    24gb Ram
    2 x 2.4Ghz Quad Core
    OS X 10.7.5
    Firewire 800

    Thanks for any insight!

    Tristan!

Is it RED ? You need a Rocket.
Is it 5K ? You need two
Is it encoding ? You need faster CPUs
Is it nodes ? You need GPU

Is it a combination of them ? you need money 🙂
Ask your client for it…if they dont have it, its a hobby.

As for GPUs your best bang for buck would probably be 3GB GTX 580s not Quadros.

based on your config, you probably have your Rocket in a 4x slot. moving it to the 16x slot will help. but you have a Q4000 in your 16x slot. yup, you’ll probably need a Cubix. if you go that route, get cheaper GeForce 5xx or 6xx cards. the Quadros aren’t faster in this case.

what are you delivering? DPX? ProRes4444? are you using Resolve or just Redcine-X? Sasha’s suggestion of 2 Rockets is only necessary for Real Time speed. if i had a Cubix, i would be torn between 2 rockets or more GPU cards. i would probably go with a single rocket and more GPUs

the cheapest answer RIGHT NOW, is to swap that ATI card for a 570, 580 or 6xx card. switch the Q4000 to GUI duty.

You also need very fast storage to do this. Its not just about the processing…

While in general you’re right, you don’t really need 2 RedRockets for 5k. It’s a bit marginal to decode 5k RedCode with just 1, but if his renders are “painfully slow”, the RedRocket is probably not the problem, and adding one more won’t do much.
