  • I’m using 5 1TB 7200 rpm hdds in Raid 0. They raid is configured under windows, not with a PCI card. Mind you, .r3ds are 36mb/sec. How’s that got to do with anything? Tell me please.

I don’t think you are all complete morons, but you were really agressive, calling me a Troll, saying that what i say is BS. I made that video just to show you. You said you knew that was impossible, that you had facts. So, tell me the FACTS. otherwise you are just plain dumb.

LOL! Fanboy alert, i just made this with my old workstation, dual quad, no HT, 16Gb of ram, Nvidia Quadro CX, internal 5TB raid in Premiere CC, windows 8.1. It is in fact a 3 year old machine, nothing special. The clips are old Red One .r3d, not prores or dnxhd, all 4K.

Andy, if you please, share your FACTS.

    Hilarious, isn’t it?

  • Have you actually tried Premiere CC on a powerfull machine? Do you know about the different resolutions you can use to display the program monitor? I’ve been editing native 4k since i bought my first Red One in 2009.

  • Like Walter said, format is really relevant. If it wasn’t prores it would be impressive otherwise is already doable in Premiere CC and a powerfull PC from last year.

A lot of people never looked outside Apple and FCPX, but the world kept going. It’s nice to have a powerfull mid range option with the new MacPro, but it is not a revolution, a speed breakthrough. It is the most powerfull choice if you use FCPX, that’s for sure, and you should be happy indeed.

  • It doesn’t take a genius to guess price considering components in a fully loaded system. 12 core xeon? Flash HDD? Two ultra expensive Ati GPUs? 128 GB of ram in only 4 memory slots? Do the math, it will be really expensive.

  • The only reason to buy the new MacPro is OSX. It will be really expensive.
It is clear now that HP is a workstation manufacturer. Laptops and desktop options for different budgets. Also intel Phi is coming out, as an option in next Dell’s workstations and to anyone with a PCIe slot available.
So, a small, 1cpu 2gpus machine looks more like a niche computer to me. Expensive, only four ram slots, only two amd cards, no pci, no second CPU, but really small. I’m sure it will be enough for a lot of people, but it will be expensive enough to make the Imac a better OSX choice.

August 26, 2013 at 2:58 pm in reply to: RedSharkNews: RED gets huge GPU workflow boost!

I think the timing is related to the Dragon 6K format. IF they want to avoid trouble with workflow issues they have to put GPU acceleration on an SDK level so every NLE can benefit from it. I think that is what they did, but at IBC we’ll know. I think we’ll see 6K native editing in realtime on premiere pro CC for example and grading on Resolve and Scratch using this new SDK, but who knows, let’s wait till IBC.

I don’t think Red have access to the new MacPro, though they can work for open CL implementation, but Cuda is more important right now. Nvidia’s Titan is a beast you can have for 1K, so for the price of a good Quadro or Firepro you can have 2 or 3 Titans on your system.

Early benchmarks of 12 core Xeons don’t show that much of an improve on speed so GPU acceleration is a must. OTOH the 10 core Xeons have higher clockspeeds, so for dual proc systems they will be the best option. My next system will be, i think, a dual 10 core Xeon with 2 or 3 Titans with tons of ram.

  • I think he meant he will stop posting on the forums. Eventually he will post again, he can’t help it. Just two days ago he was at the ASC showing Dragon Epic to some DPs, so I don’t see him stepping down any time soon.

I own a Red One MX and an Epic X, I love the cameras. One of the best investments I made in my life. DPs tend to be real snobs sometimes. One day the don’t want to shoot digital, three years after, they are shooting with HDSLRs! You don’t have to listen to everybody if you want to stay in this business for a long time.

Red’s workflow is changing for good, they previewd a new GPU accelerated Redcine, 6K 24fps realtime with just one Titan. Incredible.
