  • It is not what it actually takes to make the job, but the turn around times between the creatives at the agency and the client. Well, editing, grading and sound are not made by the same guy usually, so there you have some days.

Slightly OT, anyone tried origin pc’s? I found here: https://www.originpc.com/configurator/d/d1.aspx?SYSTEMID=9 that you can configure a dual 12 core xeon with two Titans, 128GB of ecc ram and four SSDs, for nearly 12K. It comes with good cooling, PCIes and no TB, but it is really tempting. Anyone knows anything about them? They have dual GPUs laptops also…interesting.

  • Herb, you are right. It is that, not at 1/4 but at 1/8, my fault not to clear that up. But the rest is like you said. It is in fact an old machine, dual quad without HT, so only 8 threads, 8 cores at 2.5Ghz and 16GB of ecc ram and a Quadro CX, it is an old Quadro equivalent to the 4800 model I think.
I took random 4K clips from my first shoot with the Red One, the performance was not top notch, I wouldn’t use it on a real 16 angle multicam job. I’ve never had so many angles in an edit! But it was a real benchmark with an old machine and new software. I think in a newer machine it could be a pleaseant experience.

It would be cool if when the MacPro ships we could benchmark same kind of projects in different machines, just for geek fun.

Sorry for the show, i got carried away. I am one of those that started following this forum the minute it was created, my favourite of all!!! A lot of people here are really fun to read, the actual debacle was fun in a way.
    Cheers!!!

  • [Andy Branner] “Thank you for the confirmation to my last post, regarding actual knowledge.
    https://tinypic.com/r/123pcly/5
    Oops.
And even if I had to buy 3rd party tools to do something 1 out of 10.000 (I’m being nice) even need, I’d still be HUNDREDS under the cost of just ONE PPro license. But feel free to continue working through your Premiere Pro CC October Press Release searching for “arguments”. Seems really important to you and your ego. I guess you would have been EVEN harder up for anything to rant about less than a month ago! 😀

What Walter said down there, a workaround is not a workflow, if it’s your only choice, then it’s OK.

[Andy Branner] “[Santiago Martí] “Wrong again, FCPX cannot open 6K Dragon footage, yet.”

https://www.red.com/downloads/5086c46b17ef0223980000b3 … just ignore the release date. Better for your blood-pressure.
    Oops again.”

Ok, you can open it, can you actually edit it natively in 6K? Do you have access to HDRX? Does it performs well? I’m Actually interested in the answer, prefereable without the oops, ouchs, friends in pub, etc

Yoy missed the answer to the phantom files thingy.

    [Andy Branner] “Triple oops.”
Nice one, really mature of you.

  • By the way, Ppro is not able to read 6K dragon or Phantom files yet, so that is why I was asking.
I’m really atracted to a lower end MacPro to run FCPX if the demand is there when it comes out. I still don’t like FCPX but that doesn’t mean I don’t consider it if the situation demands it, so if anyone knew some new features it would be cool.
Right now my CC is updating Prelude, Ppro, AE and speedgrade, so I think I might be able to open and edit Dragon and Phantom files, also be able to open a Ppro timeline in Speedgrade, if you like I let you know how it works, I’m curious as anyone. Cheers.
Edit: I’m also eager to try GPU redcode debayer!

  • Ooooh, how to start…When you finish an edit, you usually have to render it, so, if you open a DPX sequence, edit, then aply VFX how long does it take to render. Please, try to think, leave the playstation alone for a minute.

[Andy Branner] “Yeah, it’s just a bummer that it’s not anywhere near FULL-RES, which is the entire point of the thread. Again, reading comprehension.”
Sorry, but i couldn’t finde the FULL-RES thing in the tittle of the thread.

[Andy Branner] “Rendering?? LOL… thanks, I’ll go with realtime. Was already able to do that YEARS ago with Motion, sorry.”
How on earth you have realtime DPX on FCPX if FCPX cannot edit DPX, please, show me.

[Andy Branner] “Since day one! How about OpenEXR, TIFF, JPEG or any number of other formats… ooooh, crazy ****, hm? :-D”
Lie, you cannot edit DPX nor OpenEXR from the timeline, if you have to transcode, then it doesn’t.

[Andy Branner] “It already has for over a MONTH. And gee, guess what that means…? That means: LONGER THAN PPro HAS… oooopsyyyy. “
Wrong again, FCPX cannot open 6K Dragon footage, yet. If you have to transocode, wich you could do on any capable software, then FCPX cannot edit native 6k files.

[Andy Branner] “Hmmm… you mean maybe via the “PhantomCineToolkit” that has been around since FCP 7?! Erm… yeah, it does actually.”
You are lying again, FCPX cannot open nor edit natively Phantom originated material. If you transcode it with another application, well, do I need to keep going?

    [Andy Branner] “Now you know.”
No, I still don’t and you are not the right person to ask. Go back to GTA V

[Andy Branner] “So how is that $200 and 600MB/s RAID coming along? :-))))))”
Really well indeed, it is one of my oldest workstations working rock steady for lower res gigs.

[Andy Branner] “Use all the Premiere you want. No one cares. Be happy, make money, impress your mates at the pub. Just do yourself a favor and don’t come onto some other forum just to let off some snarky, bs remarks about something you clearly have no clue about. Trying to pull off the tired “I’m so mo’ beta PRO than YOU… njeh njeh njeh”-spiel by conjuring up all the hot-shot formats, workflows and jargon you can think of in the hope of tripping someone up. You lack even the most basic knowledge for that. It backfired, sorry. That way the two of us can save ourselves a lot typing and you won’t come off as some blowhard who’s merely trolling without rhyme nor reason just because you think hatin’ on FCP X is so cool, “pro” and the IN thing to do.”

WTF! You are really making my day!!!

  • Keep trying what?!?!? Try to hide what?!?! Got me where???

Are you 12 years old? Really, what is your point. A 1TB system flashdrive is your revolution? They’ve been around for ages. Yes, they are faster than my internal 3 year old 200$ raid, wow, magical! Do you actually use your system drive to store your editing material, are you that dumb? Do you actually edit for a living?

You have no clue what your talking about. I edit and color grade 4k and 5k material for a living. What I was trying to prove is that if you need to do 4K multicam, you can do it now, you don’t have to wait till december. It’s not impossible, nor magical, it is possible with a 3 year old system, though the software is almost new. 4K has been around for years now, it’s not another apple invention, you know. People actually has been working with 4K.

It is a 12 core xeon paired with 2 3K AMD GPU’s, what did you expect? Two HD clips and a dissolve? It is really not that impressive. Show me some DPX sequences rendering times with FX aplied. Does the new FCPX opens DPX sequences? That is what I want to know. Will it be able to send a timeline to motion? Will I be able to edit 6K Dragon footage with it whithot transcoding? What about Phantom originated material? That is what I want to know.

The MacPro is a computer with one CPU socket, 2 GPU, 64GB max ram, a flashdrive, 6 TB2 ports and no PCIEs in a really different design that runs FCPX at it’s best. If that’s what you need, it is clearly the best option. On the other hand, if you need two CPU sockets, more than 64GB of ram, more than 2 GPUs, incluiding NVIDIA as an option, and PCIEs, well, you won’t like it. That is my case.

It will be the fastest system to run FCPX on, but it won’t be faster than the latest HP z820 for that matter. And it’s cool, you don’t have to be angry. You’ll have your tube, I’ll have my mini fridge. Different needs require different solutions, I know it sounds obvious, but some people still don’t get it.
