I downloaded your clip and except for about 2 frames where the motion blur was excessive it tracked perfectly. My approach to a project like this where the track points go off screen is to stabilize the shot first, then pre-comp and stabilize fixing rotation, then precompose that and do the corner pin. You have to adjust the position of the first stabilize pass before you do the others. I then start a new comp with the clip and apply the corner pinned video with motion re introduced with expressions linking to the previous pre-comps.

I hope this workflow is clear. I learned it at a conference.

My first thought about your tracking problems is that you are setting too small a tracking area. I’ve found that AE’s tracker really likes to see a fairly large block of pixels and it likes some detail in the shot. I’d never apply round dots to a white card. A cross or some other shape on something with some detail would probably work better.

most folks pick too small a target. Make sure you’re looking at enough pixels.

try rendering an animation QT or MJpeg. Encore should handle qt’s just fine. Personally I’d avoid windows media if I could. I’m not a macaholic, I’ve just had much better results with QT in windows.

When halftones are scanned it’s critical to de-screen them. Any good scanner should come with the appropriate software. You just need to evoke the professional or pro interface.

I prefer running dust and scratches on almost all photos that are used in AE. You don’t have to do much, but you do need to kill the single pixel detail on anything that is going to an interlaced display.

I get the best results by rendering to lossless or nearly lossless files and letting Encore do the transcoding.

it’s a speed problem. You’re splitting scan lines.

You can see this in the comp window if you temporarily double the frame rate of the comp and step through one field at a time. The only solution is to change the speed of the roll or add enough blur to disguise the problem.

In one of the apps put all of your 3rd party plug-ins into a folder called 3rd party or something like that. Now select the folder and create an Alias (mac) or a Shortcut (windows). Now go to the other app’s plug-ins directory and put the Alias or Shortcut there. No duplicate files necessary. The Alias/shortcut will take care of it. The only problem you may have is with plug-ins that don’t place them in the Adobe/AE/plug-ins directory or if your on an intel mac, some of the plug-ins may not show up in CS3 because they are not UB yet.
