When i’ve done this kind of thing I animated the fractal noise offset and didn’t rotate the sphere. this gives the same effect. the sphere appears to rotate but the cloud pattern changes as the planet rotates instead of staying the same.
also, if it is just clouds that you want photoshop clouds renders paterns that perfectly offset if the size is a multiple of 64 pixels like 1280 x 480. then you can use the pattern for a sphere without any seams.

apply your lightning to a black solid set to screen blend mode, then trim the solid in and out points along with animating the lightning. It’s not a good idea to try and do everything on one layer.

i always make sure that they are at about 100% scale sometime in the project. Otherwise they are too big and the detail when you pull out makes funny things happen. I also always treat my scanned or digital camera images with the dust and scratches filter in photoshop. It just slightly softenes the detailed areas when set properly and keeps the weird flickers from happening. I found the dust and scratches tip here at the cow in the archives.

when I was in school we did a fake hit and run by locking down the camera, having the car drive by then having the actor walk through the scene, then we put a dummy that was just made of long handled underwear and straw and the actors pants and shirt in the road where the actor had been when he was in the middle of the street and then the car ran over the dummy.
We just did a wipe between the actor and the car footage just cutting off the left edge of the actor shot and showing the right side of the car shot, and then cut to the shot of the car hitting the dummy at the right time. It was amazingly effective especially when the next shot was a closeup of our actor falling to the street wearing the dirty and ripped up cloths that we took off the dummy. He actually only lifted his back about 4 inches off the pavement and then kind of convulsed. The dummy didn’t even have a head, hands, or shoes, but nobody noticed because of the visual shock of the impact and the blur as the dummy went flying. Folks were congratulating the guy we shot for his amazing stunt work and were amazed that he took the hit from the car. None of us ever told how we did the shot and i -
thats a good one Serge but this is the one that I had in my notebook.
I’m going to also add your example. Love this place. my notebook is filling up. it would be great if there were a way to search for posts that included linked projects because they really help me out.

holding down the ctrl or option key converts the direct selection key to the pen tool while the key is held down. add the alt or option for mac, and you get the convert point tool. that’s what i use all the time.

you should search the archives for text around corner. I found a n example project and made a note in my notebook which I don’t have with me right now. I can’t remember who made the post, and I’ve only got a minute or two so can’t search myself.

I have read this thread with great interest. my dad used to say that one man with a shovel is never worth more than another man with a shovel, about $2.00 a day, but the guy that designed the ditch is worth what ever he can convince someone he is worth and his back doesn’t get sore and his hands don’t get dirty. Some day I hope that people think of me as a designer so I can get what I think I’m worth. Until then I take what I can get and try not to give away my time so much that the folks I work for don’t place any value on my time. Is my stuf artistic, sometimes. Have I ever gotten paid well for the time invested – only once that I can think of. Is this fun and worth the time I’m spending – I hope so, but it won’t happen until I’m good enough with the tools and fast enough with the ideas, and inovative enough with ideas that tell a good story that people think of me as the guy they need to go to instead of just another guy with a shovel.
