shake is much more difficult to learn than AE. I’ve been at it for about a month. from what I heard and have found out, animating motion in shake is a pain, but the keying and compositing is quite good, just a little hard to get a handle on. to tell the truth, after a month of poking at shake I can get better results with keylight and the standard cc filters in AE in less time. that will probably change once I figure out how to use shake better

lots of lines and most text on a web page is 1 pixel wide. If you take a great big screen shot and shrink it down you’ll end up with a mess. better approach would be to take a small screenshot say 600 X 800 then scale up with nearest neighbor to make the thin lines at least 2 pixels wide so they will show up on tv

this is an old one but neat

apply to an adjustment layer that uses a gradient as a track matte

I think the nano’s in the spot were lit internally and the set had barely any light. then the nano’s were tracked and a particle system was used to build the lines. there may also have been a bit of an echo effect applied to a high contrast version with the actors blocked by either masking or some kind of channel adjustments. Very clever, but they look a lot like some nbc adds from about 3 years ago where stars of their prime time lineup were drawing with light and I think pitching that the network cares about families or something like that. at least I think it was nbc… don’t have much time to watch tv.

in the expression language menu under “Global” you’ll find a bunch of expressions already written for you that use the time of the comp to generate counters.
Time to feet and frames is one of them. Just start a new text layer and add the expression to the source text property then set the number of frames per foot. It couldn’t be easier. I think it defaults to 35mm, 16mm is 40 frames per foot, 35mm is 16.
make sure you pick a monospaced font so the numbers don’t jump around. the expression language menu is right next to the pickwhip and look like a little triangle.
