    Hey Jeff,

Either way… always put in a ticket because your support contract covers workflow as well, so even if it’s not a Jellyfish problem, we still help with things like this, so don’t ever hesitate to reach out. When you’re one of our customers and having a problem, it is our job to help you solve it. Bottom line.

Also… you’re probably completely right. Deleting generated library files (all renders) can also be a great way to take care of problems like this.

    Have a great Thanksgiving!

    Hey Jeff!

Put in a ticket when something like this happens (we’ll help you take care of this stuff and dive in deeper on the troubleshoot… and let me know if this has not already happened). That said, a couple things to try before going deeper:

    1. What happens when you place that same library local for a second and try to export?
    2. Does anything happen when you try to open the library from the backup or is it the same issue?
    3. What happens if you create a new library and copy the problem event/sequence into the new library?

Seems like it could be a permissions issue… but definitely talk to support and we’ll get it figured out one way or another. Have a great Thanksgiving!

July 21, 2016 at 10:25 pm in reply to: Major massive SMB issues with OS X 10.11.5

    Hey Bob,

Yeah… this totally sucked… Late to the party on this, BUT, as a public service to anyone who runs into this issue, we fixed this over at Lumaforge a few weeks ago with a button in our Shareclient app that’s included for our ShareStation users… and it should work for you with SMB as well if you run into this issue… so, if you need a quick, easy fix, drop me an email at sam@lumaforge.com, and I’ll send you a copy of the app.

All you’ll need to do is go to the SMB tab and click “Enable” and it should fix this problem as long as you’re connecting SMB 3.0 or higher.

On the ShareStation, prior to clicking this, we were getting 11 MB/s over SMB on 10.11.5, and it immediately brought us back to the 700-1100 MB/s we’re used to seeing over SMB over 10G.

Could not agree more with this, Bob. Neil’s doing 40G direct to his Windows machines now over NFS and SMB with the ShareStation and he’s able to stitch VR in 10k with this. It very much opens up 4k DPX and EXR workflows for VFX as well. When Thunderbolt 3 hits, you’ll be able to do this on the Mac too… 40G into a 10G switch is already commonplace on the facility side.

In general, the need for this can’t be ignored in terms of where this industry is headed. To be honest, I don’t think anyone knows what will be possible when the switch in the mainstream workflow happens.

March 21, 2016 at 4:09 pm in reply to: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – CPN

    Hey Bob,

Thanks for the kind words. Honestly, we would LOVE to have you come see us at NAB in our workflow suite, and really walk you through what we’re doing… better yet, I’d encourage you to go see everyone else’s stuff, and then come see our demo. There is a touch and feel aspect to our products that often gets lost in a see of spec sheets, features, and number of ports… We’d love to find a good way to come see our product in person and really tell us what you think… we’d even be happy to put together a private demo to your specifications for you that I don’t think you’ll be able see another vendor perform.

Bottom line, let’s talk if you’re interested, and worst case scenario, I’d love to buy you a beer at NAB.

November 8, 2015 at 11:04 pm in reply to: 10GB SAN for Davinci Resolve 12.

    Hey Nat,

At Lumaforge, we happen to make a NAS that is perfect for Resolve 12. Not only that, but we’re happy to put our system up under any kind of real world test you’d like to see. We do gigabit, 10G, or 40G Ethernet direct to the client, and our system works for OSX, Windows, or LInux. Over 40G, we can do 4K open EXR in a shared environment on Resolve.

Bottom line is that, we’d love to talk with you about your needs, and we’re happy to give you a demo to whatever your specs are for performance. Drop me an email at sam@lumforge.com and let’s talk. I think you’ll be really happy with what we have to show you.

Just to clear a couple things up… I have no idea what Apple will be presenting… and please, if you listen to what I said on the grill, don’t read any tea leaves. As I said there, you should keep your expectations low, and all I really know is what’s listed on our site… here’s a link to it:

  • As usual… leave it to Oliver Peters to say something smart.

Honestly, if there was one brilliant thing that was done as a part of the Focus process, it was bringing the departments (editorial, vfx, sound) closer together, and having them all working together under the same roof until it came time to close the show.

THAT IS THE REAL INNOVATION. You don’t need a million people working in a million places to get something done.

Get your core team in a room, talk to each other, collaborate, tell your story, move forward. Edit, sound, color, VFX can all be done in the same place and in the same workgroup if you plan it out properly… and you can do it in a shared environment.

If nothing else, Focus will hopefully signal the end of the bureaucracy that currently plagues high end storytelling. The amount of work that a few competent people can get done in a room together has never been higher… regardless of what editing platform you choose.

On a side note… if you want to see the cage match that is FCPX Or Not: The Debate turned into a live setting… you should come hang out at the FCPWORKS Suite at NAB (we’re going to have a bit of a special panel… and this is almost confirmed). Same goes for if you want to know more about the who, what, why, and how of Focus. Mike Matzdorff and I will be there talking about that as well.

Lot’s of cool stuff coming down the pike. It’s an exciting time to be in post production.

[Shane Ross] “And BOY OH BOY did those guys complain and use the software improperly in all sorts of ways. They caused the biggest messes. But that didn’t matter…they had someone fix it, like the cheap assistant. And they learned on the job.”

The more things change, the more they stay the same… FCP7 editors have a similar bad habit with X. Bill, thanks for the shoutout (in both threads)! I owe you an email. Everyone else… if you know what you’re doing with X and you live in LA, please contact me.

February 4, 2015 at 5:41 pm in reply to: The continuing saga of FCP to Resolve to Avid

The bottom line is this… if you go into Resolve expecting to do anything associated with Audio, you are entering a world of pain.

Resolve is simply not ready for prime time when it comes to audio at this point, unless you just want to drop in a finished mix at the end.

It’s a fantastic finishing tool that is learning how to be an NLE… and is a great one as long as you don’t need sound with your picture.

Also, I’ve tried the FCPX to Avid rabbit hole… bottom line is that you shouldn’t trust it for anything remotely complicated.

AAF’s are a bit of a nightmare and Avid is notoriously bad at playing well with others.

Getting to Premiere/FCP7 is a far better insurance policy using X to 7.

X2Pro works great for audio, but breaks down with video over AAF.

Why Avid won’t just use XML already is one of the great mysteries of our time… but until it happens, honestly, even attempting what you’re trying to do is just more trouble than it’s worth.
