Chris,
Just to let you know that I bumped the max rate and lowered the average rate…which made for a dramatic
improvement. This first attempt turned a nearly unwatchable scene into one that is really decent.I’ll try more settings to see whether it can be fine tuned.
Thank you!

Thanks for the suggestions, Chris. I will give them a try and let you know how I make out.

Perhaps this should have been posted in the DVDSP forum. If so, let me know.
I’ll take brief stab at trying to better describe the problem that I called jittery. It’s not that the whole frame is jumping about; nor is it flickering. Rather it’s the sudden and intermittent appearance of artifacts in sizable parts of the image. The worst of it (the pumpkin scene was shot without any camera movement and without any zooming. The fall foliage was handled well by Compressor in other clips.
I just don’t know enough about compression matters to know where to start. So any advice would be welcome.

Thanks, Gareth.
I followed something akin to your second strategy… and got test which they were happy with.
Appreciate the help.

So does this clip have a .mov extension?
Have you tried opening in MPEG Streamclip?

Thanks, Richard.
Still – doesn’t maxing out in five minutes indicate something other than reaching a file size limitation? The manual notes the 4 GB limit and suggests the shooter should be able to get about 12 minutes of 1080p before that is reached.
I’ll run some timed tests under different conditions and post results that are more specific.

Hi Todd and thanks for your help.
Although I don’t have access until tomorrow to the same deck I was using for capture, I was able to test the problem tape with a (very) old Sony PC100…and it captured no problem!
I have no idea what it means – except that there is apparently not a problem with the tape. FW cable is the same one I used yesterday, and the capture settings are unchanged as well. Guess that implicates the deck.
Thanks again.

Have you tired capturing directly to an external drive?
We recently bought an iMac and had assumed that going forward my capturing would have to be done with our MBP (which has an express card slot) – then I would copy my project file to the iMac. Instead, out of curiosity, I tried capturing directly to the daisy-chained HD and was pleasantly surprised that I encountered no problems. This, however, was with DV footage, so perhaps it wouldn’t work as well with HDV.

Have you looked at your user manual? There is an entire chapter (16) devoted to working with HDV.
Good luck.

Just a thought: the 17 inch MBP model still offers an expresscard/34 slot.
