Posted on Apple FCP discussions with no response.

The shortened version is I had two 30 minute DV tapes, shot with the same cameras to the same deck in successive shoots. Capturing the first tape (DV NTSC settings), no problem. Capturing the second, repeatedly failed with “cannot perform operation… no video” message. Have captured 100’s of tapes and this is first time for this problem.

After trying alternative capture settings with no success, I gave up and captured with iMovie.

Any ideas on what may be going on?

    Thanks.

    Hi Russ,

First thing I would be checking is to see how the tape is playing in the deck, regardless of iMovie or FCP. Watch the tape on a monitor with timecode running will give you an idea if the tape is playing back properly. FCP can be sensitive to time-code breaks and video dropouts.
    Trash prefs, restart.

Check with another tape to see if the problem continues or if it’s just that particular tape.

    Good Luck,

Hi Todd and thanks for your help.

Although I don’t have access until tomorrow to the same deck I was using for capture, I was able to test the problem tape with a (very) old Sony PC100…and it captured no problem!

I have no idea what it means – except that there is apparently not a problem with the tape. FW cable is the same one I used yesterday, and the capture settings are unchanged as well. Guess that implicates the deck.

    Thanks again.

    Russ
