eSATA is the fastest, but if you can’t do that, then get FireWire800. If your computer has FireWire400 instead, then get that. If you don’t have FireWire, then USB is your only option.
Don’t expect great results with USB drives and Macs. FireWire and Macs work much better together.
I don’t like to zip files for storage. With video files, it usually doesn’t buy you much.

I would suggest you have your film transfered to HDCAM SR at 23.98. Then digitize that in. You might consider doing the edit in ProRes, then for the FX, capturing just the footage you need to DPX sequences. That way you stay 4:4:4 for the FX shots. You can render the FX shots out to ProRes if you want, but then you will have a 4:2:2 master instead.
I would suggest doing the offline edit in ProRes, but then finishing on a higher end system so you’ll have a 4:4:4 master. ProRes is great, but if you’re shooting with both film and the Phantom, I would suggest trying to get the best master you can. It might mean conforming at a bigger facility that can handle 4:4:4 material.

Shane’s right. Converting to ProRes is a great way to go. I also suggest keeping all of the original source files from the camera and backing them up. Use reel names too for each time you copy stuff from the camera. That way, if you need to go back to bring in some new footage, you can.
Also, try to shoot the same frame rates if you can. Most HDV and AVCHD will be 60i, so it shouldn’t be a problem unless you’ve shot at some other frame rate.

Someone contacted me about this post and I wasn’t able to take the call. I was actually golfing at the time and wrote the number on the scorecard, which someone in the group promptly threw away (because the scores were nothing that any of us wanted to remember!) You get major creative points with that one:) I think Mike Weber added to it. Use the built in VNC to accept the iChat, so nobody has to be on the computer. Interesting idea.
I use the built in vnc all the time to check on renders or get new ones started. It’s great for when nobody’s in the office, but I still need to get stuff done from home over the weekend. I don’t have to bring the computers home with me now to babysit renders.
Definitely a great call on the looping audio though!

You need an adapter. P2 uses PCMCIA form factor, not the ExpressCard32 form factor that the 17″ has.
