Select the video processing tab and select “Render all YVU material in high-precision YUV” and change motion filtering quailty to best.
Then – Go for it.
Did that look better?
Note: It’s probably better if you delete your render files first.

If I were in your position, I would have made the decision to edit everything at 23.98 instead of 29.97. Everything that you shot it 24P and there are proven workflows for removing the 2:3 pulldown (especially if you have a Kona 3 card.)
For DV50 24P material, you can digitize it with the Kona 3 and have it remove the 2:3 pulldown.
With the HVX200, when you import you can choose, remove duplicate frames on import. That leaves you with a 23.98 file. Then you just need to downconvert without playing around with tricks to change the frame rate.
Then you edit and when you lay it off to tape, the Kona 3 will add a consistant 2:3 pulldown to convert it it 29.97. Or if you’re finishing to DVD, just encode the 23.98 file to mpeg-2. That will work perfectly.
While I don’t have any nifty ideas on how to help you, a better workflow a couple of weeks ago could have save you a lot of time now.

q1 – So you had a stereo mix that you wanted to send mono out to channels 3 and 4? Okay, it’s not making sense to me why you would want to do that, but there is an easier way.
a1 – Duplicate the stereo file so that it takes up 4 tracks. Map both tracks of the first file to output track 3 and map both tracks of the second file to track 4. In doing this it is possible that your audio might start clipping because you’re adding two volumes together, so it is “best practices” to go to Mark – Audio Peaks – Mark. It will take a little while, but you can’t have audio clipping on your tape so it’s worth it (or you’ll just have to do it over later when someone gets the tape and says, “Hey, the audio’s clipping. Make me a new tape!”)
q2 – Exporting QuickTime with multiple channels of audio
a2 – Yes, file – export – quicktime movie. You just need to have the audio mapped right, like you do.

I just played with a clip for a little bit in FCP and came up with some really fun looks. As mannfilmz said if you use just the highlights, they’ll start clipping. So try pulling different chroma and luma values and see what you like. It all depends of the show.
I’ve never really like the results of the color corrector in FCP. It always seems to look like someone played with the color. I really only use it for minor adjustments. You might look into Colorista by Magic Bullet. I’ve heard good things about it and it’s only $200.

Try something like this an see if it’s what you’re talking about.
1. First, apply your color correction and try to get the basic color the way you want it. I’ve seen a lot of with a blue tint that looks nice. Kind of dark and desaturated blue. Play with it.
2. Duplicate your clip and above the current clip
3. Add the luma key and play with it until you only keep the hightlights
4. Change the duplicated clip (the one on top) composite mode to add (right click, composite mode, add)
5. Add a blur to the duplicated clip and blur to taste
Is this close to what you where looking for?

If I remember correctly, that’s right. You need FCP 5 to import. Hmmm… I haven’t used it, but P2 Genie software might convert it to quicktime movies. I’m not sure. You might look into it.
